Yesterday I got back from 5 days in Etown. I brought my Papa home from the rehab center, took my Nana to the doctor to get her back on thyroid medicine and hopefully improve her mental function, and made sure they were generally safe at home with everything they would need. It is absolutely amazing how much my grandfather has improved over the past 3 months... from not able to stand on his own to walking around with a walker for considerable distances, going out to restaurants, and now doing things he couldn't do even before his surgery. When he was living at home before his perforated stomach ulcer, he wasn't walking around easily, couldn't dress himself, and certainly couldn't tie his shoes. Now his memory is better, he's dressing himself, and tying his own shoes... I think it's a combination of the occupational therapy he had in rehab and the Nemenda they added to his drug regimen. It has made me so happy =) I'm still trying to convince them to move into an assisted living place (they have a really nice one not far from their house), but so far they've refused. I'll do my best to honor their wishes and keep the at home as long as possible, as long as it's safe.
Tonight I've been texting Bobby, who is currently at my grandparent's house... Tender Touch (the company that sends aids into their home) called him and told him their power was out, so he brought a propane heater from his house down to Etown to keep them warm. He said he would stay as long as they needed him.... I was so thankful to hear that! Apparently about 2000 people around Hardin Co are out of power according to the news. I have no idea they'd do without him. Luckily, one of the aids that works for them in the evening lives one street over and can just walk to their house. I'm not sure if the day-time aid will be able to get there tomorrow. Again, thank goodness Bobby's there. I had heard there was a snow storm coming through KY when I was visiting, but I thought it was just going to be a couple of inches of snow and some icy conditions. I had no idea a full blown ice storm was coming through. I hope power gets restored quickly! I told Bobby he should get the gas fireplace going and warm up some food using the fire... sounds kinda fun to me =)
So, this coming Saturday, we'll finally be moving to Lexington... hopefully it'll be thawed out by the time we get there. The plan is to stay there for a maximum of 2 months, then if none of Jason's job prospects pan out by that point, we're just going to move to a nearby large city (Chicago or Indianapolis maybe?) and I'll start working at a PA and hope that a job eventually opens up for him there. This plan B isn't very promising for Jason's career, but we can't wait forever. Plan C is that I just get a job in KY as a PA, and Jason picks a new career. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. I'm optimistic that Plan A will work out though.
It's nice to be in a warm place. I'm going to miss Atlanta, and the people here that have made it home.
