Summary You never forget your first trip to Diagon Alley.
Disclaimer I owe it all to JKR.
Apart from the holiday season, August was one of the busiest times in Diagon Alley. Stores took advantage of the influx of wizard folk shopping for school to display the latest products from their suppliers. August also meant frazzled parents, willing to purchase just about anything to satisfy the children their habits had spoilt. Draco Malfoy fit this profile perfectly, and even though this was to be his first term attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he was no stranger to the end of summer shopping trips enjoyed by his mother.
This year’s excursion started just like any other. The morning was spent exhausting the staff at Twillfit and Tatting’s, next they had lunch at the newest upscale eatery, and their afternoon started with Flourish & Blotts.
Before Hogwarts, Draco would spend his time browsing the latest Quidditch books and Wizarding comics while his mother Narcissa added to her extensive collection of beauty and fashion magazines. With the arrival of his acceptance letter and book list, Draco started to show interest in more subjects and was spending his time that day in other sections of the store.
Narcissa was busy supervising a few shop employees as they gathered his books so he wandered into the Potions aisle, finding he wasn’t the only child whose interests had broadened over the summer. Before him stood a girl with impossibly bushy brown hair who was paging through Dragon’s Blood, Boomslang Skin, and Bubotuber Pus: An Encyclopedia of Potions Ingredients, Forward by Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. Immediately he became interested in the girl before him whose brown eyes were wide with interest as she finished a page, quickly turning to read the next.
She was dressed quite plainly in comparison to the rest of the shoppers. The girl did not have a robe and was wearing a grey Norlender sweater with an intricate latticework of serpents and ivy knitted across the chest and shoulders. A dark green wool skirt and black tights completed her outfit, and the Slytherin air it portrayed overtook any muggle identifiers that should have registered in Draco’s mind.
Growing up, the boy’s friends never showed interest in anything other than Quidditch and curses, so finding someone who he possibly could relate to on an intellectual level was very exciting. He straightened his shoulders and started to walk towards her when his mother’s voice sounded from behind, “Come Draco, we are done here.”
“But Mother, I need a few minutes more. There was a book I wanted to...” Draco addressed Narcissa with a practiced whine, looking back to check on the girl only to find she had gone.
“You had plenty of time to browse. We have other places to be.”
With his excuse for lingering nowhere in sight, Draco complied with a muttered, "Yes, Mother," and left the shop pouting in Narcissa's wake.

“Once you are sorted you will find these robes have been embellished with the coordinating colors and crest of your house.”
“But how do you manage that?” Hermione Granger’s tone was polite, but she was very curious and trying hard keep from asking too many questions of the patient seamstress helping her. The acceptance letter from Hogwarts raised more questions than it answered, but at least she had an explanation for how her mother’s beloved vase that she accidentally broke at the age of 5 repaired itself whilst she cried her eyes out after an unsuccessful attempt to glue it back together.
“Oh, I’m not the one that makes those alterations, it’s the-“ Madam Malkin was cut off by the twinkling of bells as a blonde woman and an equally blond boy walked in through the shop’s door.
“Good afternoon Mrs. Malfoy, I will be right with you. I’m nearly done with these measurements.”
“Thank you Madam Malkin.” Narcissa responded courteously to the owner as she made her way to the till at the side of the shop. Draco immediately left her side to find the Quidditch section, recognizing the girl standing on the fitting dais as same one he saw in the bookshop.
“There you go dear, you should be all set.” The squat witch smiled as she finished, her charmed measuring tape rolling up and packing itself away on a nearby shelf.
“Thank you. Do you have my address? After all, I’m not-“
“Don’t worry about it,” Malkin cut in. “Minerva owled me earlier and it is all taken care of. Now if you would please excuse me, just leave that robe on that peg over there.”
Hermione smiled her thanks as the proprietress left to check on the other customers. The girl turned to examine her reflection as she started unbuttoning the robes. There was so much to get used to and she was feeling somewhat overwhelmed, but everyone she had met thus far had been very nice to her. That courtesy was certainly helping to calm her anxiety. She put away the garment and went to gather her parcels, finding the blond boy eying her curiously.
“Hello, ” she said politely.
“Hello, are you attending Hogwarts too?”
“Yes, it will be my first term.”
“Same for me, my name is-“
“Draco, would you be so kind to grace us with your presence? Honestly, how can I purchase you robes if you aren’t properly measured beforehand?” Narcissa called across the store, gazing sternly at her son.
The boy blanched and smiled sheepishly at girl, “Well, I’ll be seeing you in a couple weeks. Goodbye.”
"Mine's Hermione. Goodbye, Draco,” she shared his small smile as he backed away.
