Hello, it’s actor appreciation time.

Sometimes I have Strong Opinions about acting. Or I wouldn’t call them opinions, I guess: more like preferences and instincts. I don’t have the credentials to make claims on the quality of an acting performance. And even had I a solid understanding of the craft (through either study or experience), I would still know that something as personal and nuanced as acting can’t quite be objectively judged. And yet I have enough faith in my gut responses to take them seriously. I think they’re important.

All this to say.

I have always felt that Jensen Ackles possessed something incredibly, incredibly special as an actor. He has an absolute gift for comedy. He has an absolute gift for drama. He has an exceptionally fluent physicality. He’s so natural, he’s so instinctual, he’s so effortlessly spot-on all the damn time. He’s fantastic. He’s one in a million. It's absolute madness to me that he's not a Hollywood mega star. In any other world, I think he would be. But we're in the world where he lands Supernatural, and he's devoted to his character, and the show continues on for seasons and seasons and he gives us more and more Dean Winchester. It’s insane. Sometimes when I think about it I want to cry. I think he’s a rare type of brilliant. My Strong Opinion about Jensen Ackles is that he is top-tier good.

Honestly, I was hoping Sheila O’Malley would post something on his birthday. I was betting that she would. And she did. XD As a film critic and former working actor she obviously has a lot more insight into Ackles’ acting than I do, and so I very much appreciate her enthusiasm for it. I love reading what she says because she both loves what he does and has the knowledge and applied passion to talk about it, with terms and descriptions for things that I’ve mostly experienced as impressions. Thanks, Sheila. (You can read the post here, where she also gives links to related content on her blog-including her original essay on JA, which is well over 5000 words long and inspired by a single tiny moment in the show. All of which is right up my alley.)

I wanted to post this on March 1st, but then things happened, oops. Anyway. Happy belated birthday, Mr. Jensen Ackles. My appreciation knows no bounds. <3
