Driver picks the music...

I’m putting together an “album side” to submit to my local classic rock radio station. They choose one submission to play every weekday and I’m like “SOMEDAY THEY WILL PLAY MINE.” Of course, I have to send one to them first. But how to choose the tracks? How to narrow down the entire catalog of classic rock to a mere seven songs?? How to approach ( Read more... )

Ooh along with your list--"Heroin" by the Velvet Underground" (9x16) and "Prison Grove" by Warren Zevon (11 x 11)! Love this idea-- and in general thinking about music/compilations/soundtracks/cues . I have thoughts on music I liked independent of SPN (these two tracks , "Rooster", and "Laugh, I Nearly Died", are some examples of that) and things I like more because of the show/how they were used as cues...

Ooh, thanks for voting, and for those mentions! I’ll admit that I’m less cognizant of the tracks used in later seasons, since I’ve watched those fewer times. Good ones, both of those.

I do love how the show influences music taste: I probably wouldn’t have listened to much classic rock if not for Supernatural. And there are certainly some tracks (like “Rooster”) that are my favorites independent of the show (even if SPN was the first place I really heard them), and some that are favorites as a part of the show (I absolutely adore how “Renegade” was used in 2x12) more so than as tracks in and of themselves. “Night Moves” is the best of both worlds in that regard. <3

Is “Carry On Wayward Son” too obvious?

Whoops, never mind - just re-read and saw you’re avoiding TRSF songs!

You do well to make sure I don’t forget!! :P “Carry On Wayward Son” is THE ULTIMATE.

I’m cheating a little with “Foreplay/Long Time,” because it was used during a recap-or, at least, the Foreplay part of it was-but it was also used during the episode, on the car radio! (Which was really fantastic, imo.) I’m actually thinking of doing one side for “Impala songs” and one for the rest, mostly as a ploy to avoid decision-making. XD Thanks so much for the votes!

I was JUST, MINUTES AGO, listening to Foreplay/Long Time and thinking about how it was used in AHBL part 1, where it starts out as the soundtrack and then becomes the song playing on the radio and I love that. Which reminds me, another great example of that is “Spirit in the Sky,” in the episode Good God Y’all. What do you think about that one?

Yesss, a good use of Boston!! I’m always a little disappointed when the radio fizzles out in that ep, because it’s right before my favorite part of the song. :P And mmm, yes, I really like that bit in 5x02. Just them slowly walking through that empty town, and then the eeriness of the song coming from the abandoned car. (A cheery song with religious overtones playing over a scene of quiet destruction is a good flavor.) That's somehow not a scene I've revisited much, so it was nice to have the excuse. :)

ALL OF THESE SONGS ARE EXCELLENT CHOICES. My choices were based purely on whether they seemed like the kind of song Michigan would crank it up for on the radio, but how can you go wrong, really!!!! Good luck! :DD

TOO MANY GOOD CHOICES! Part of me wants to choose songs that wouldn’t normally get air time on the radio because maybe that’s a rare opportunity to hear those tracks over the airwaves! But part of me just wants to make a compilation of all the best jams. I tried putting a personal album side together and ended up with 30 tracks and counting! I thought that a Supernatural theme would be less personal and therefore easier to manage, but, uh… turns out SPN is still pretty personal. Who knew. XPP Even with rules to narrow the field, it’s so hard to pick!

Thank you for your input!!

Thanks for weighing in!! It’s so hard to choose. I may just submit five sides at once; they’ll be sure to play one eventually! XD

Hope they pick your side! My picks were both personal favorites and song cues that have really stuck with me over the years.

Thanks so much!! I keep coming back to “Can’t Find My Way Home”-it’s probably too “folksy” for your typical classic rock radio fare, so it would be nice to take the opportunity to request it. There’s an atmosphere to that one that I really love. All that beautiful percussion. <3

Hey, if they didn’t play that song on classic album rock radio, I never would have heard of it! Trust me, it works.

Oh, for sure! It’s not a track I’d hear playing on this particular station, though. Which perhaps makes it all the more appealing as a special request!
