Ask the Maker Tute #2 (requested by wickdshy and reebeecaa)

One

Step 1
Crop your chosen capture and sharpen it. I'm pretty lazy with my sharpening, I duplicate the base layer, apply a sharpen filter, then lower the layer's opacity until it looks right (in this icon I lowered it to 21%)

Step 2
Create a transparent new layer, using a soft white brush paint areas where you would like highlights, I chose his cheek and collar, set this layer to softlight and lower the opacity until the highlights look natural (here it is lowered to 21%)

Step 3
Using a curves layer lighten and remove the yellow tone to the icon. I used the following points:
RGB: (0,0), (86,177), (255,255)
RED: (0,0), (148,128), (255,255)
BLUE: (0,0), (111,139), (255,255)
Or make it look like this:

Step 4
Add a colour fill layer of a bright yellow (#ffdb11), set to softlight 16%. Then another curves layer with the follow points:
RGB: (0,0), (126,146), (255,255)
BLUE: (0,0), (131,123), (255,255)

to

Step 5
Add a colour fill layer of berry-red (#b62248), set to softlight 10%, then add another colour layer of green (#6c9466) and set to softlight 28%

Step 6- Upping the contrast
Add a black/white gradient map layer, set to softlight 100%. Then add a new transparent layer, painting in highlights with a soft white brush paint the areas of highlights, I set it to softlight on a pretty low opacity (4%) but it depends on your taste. Add another transparent layer, painting in shadows with a soft black brush set to softlight ~80%

Two

Step 1
Crop your chosen capture and sharpen it. Again, I duplicate the base layer, apply a sharpen filter, then lower the layer's opacity until it looks right (in this icon I lowered it to 17%). Lighten the icon with a curves layer with the settings: RGB: (0,0), (126,146), (255,255)

to

Step 2
Create a colour fill layer with a tan colour (#bba38b), set it to softlight 45%. Duplicate this layer, change it to multiply with 8% opacity.

Step 3
Create a colour fill layer with a bright yellow colour (#faf829), set it to overlay 8%. Create another tan fill layer (#bba38b), set to screen 8%.

Step 4
Create a gradient map layer with grey (#898989) to pale brown (#9b7d5e), set to softlight 50%. Create a black/white gradient map set to softlight 85%

to

Step 5
Lighten the icon further with another curves layer with the settings: RGB: (0,0), (117,134), (255,255). Then add a colour fill layer with a brown colour (#998275), softlight at 43%.

Step 6
Add a vibrance layer (vibrance +53, saturation -17). Then add a fill colour layer with a cream colour (#fff4b6) set to softlight 8%, then duplicate it and set the new layer to multiply 17%

Step 7
Add another vibrance layer (vibrance -74), then lighten it again with a curves layer with the points: RGB: (0,0), (144,153), (255,255)

And that's it, any questions just ask :)
