Nearing the end
My Uncle Joe decided last week to cease his dialysis treatments. I have been going every day to see him and each time, he has slipped a little further into unconsciousness. This morning, I am making his final arrangements.
When I asked him if he understood the outcome of stopping dialysis he said he missed his wife (Aunt Margie died in 2006) and just wanted to rest. I get it. As his healthcare proxy, I back his choice 100%. The nursing home made sure we knew what was going on and he will get palliative care and pain management from here on in.
Now, we wait.
