The lucky ones

Oct 31, 2012 08:03

While I still have only partial power and Mom's power is still out completely, I count my blessings and feel incredibly lucky that things weren't worse for us. Other than being stir crazy, we are safe, warm and dry. Thanks to how the house is wired I still have heat and my fridge has power. Thanks to some ingenuity and a long extension cord, I've managed to do laundry, first plugging in the washer and then the dryer. I really feel blessed that all my immediate family is safe.
I haven't ventured out yet to survey damage in the neighborhood but I can see that a neighbor on the next block had a tree fall on their house. Howard's kids are safe in Staten Island but the pictures they sent are scary. The fire that took 50 homes in Breezy Point leaves me speechless. As does the looting that has occurred in some places. There will always be people willing to take advantage of a bad situation. However, I have also read stories of people offering help and shelter and that restores some of my faith in the human race.
