A question for my fellow cat owners

Has anyone out there had an experience where their cat suddenly turned aggressive? My mom has two cats, one that is near 20 years old and one that is 4-5 years old. The younger of the two has never been overly friendly but is not generally aggressive. On Monday, when Mom's visiting nurse came, the cat attacked her without being provoked. The nurse ( Read more... )

Oh wow, that's tough. :( The only time I've heard of it (from a friend) is when they were sick, but that's already been checked. The hormonal thing sounds like a good theory, so I hope it helps!

Very tough. She's a somewhat aloof cat to start with. She only lets me clip her nails when she is in heat but I've never been bit by her unless I was trying to give her meds or cut nails. All the bloodwork and kidney and liver levels were normal. I hope it helps too. Thanks.

this happened with one of our cats... anonymous October 16 2012, 23:31:50 UTC
we had no idea what was going on went to vet nothing was wrong with her medically she was already spayed...then we realized that the stereo was left on and was emitting a high pitched noise that was aggravating the cat...cause when we discovered it was turned on but nothing was engaged..it was on standby and when we shut it off..the aggressive seemed to disappear..as a matter of fact she wandered off and passed out...

this was trial and error...we weren't sure what was going on just happened to discover this that the cat was sensitive to high frequencies moreso...it could be a smell too that they are reacting to...something that is setting them off ...another friend of mine had a cat that whenever she put on balm for her knee he'd go after her hand and knee or wherever and bite her quite badly ...quite a few times...logic of course stop using that brand...something in it triggered the aggression...

good luck and i hope things work out :)

Is the cat strictly an indoor cat, indoor/outdoor, or mostly outdoor?

Strictly indoor, up to date on shots. No new things except for the tag.

Hum. If the violent behaviour were only happening at your Mom's house, I'd ask if the cat might have sensed a change in her condition that (in the cat's eyes) might require her to be protected. One of our cats bit aegidian out of the blue when I was in labour, apparently thinking I needed to be protected from interfering males. But in that case, I'd have expected her to calm down at the vet's. Has the vet been able to rule out some neurological disorder such as epilepsy or a brain tumour, which would not necessarily show up in blood tests?

Also, in addition to the Bach's remedy, have you considered using something like Feliway? It works very well for our nervous cat, and is supposed to help with aggression as well, although I have no direct experience of it for that.

She was not violent at the vets, just testy but that could be the strange environment. She's hissing now, in my master bathroom, but again that could be the unknown surroundings. She was not showing any signs of seizures and we did not do a scan for brain tumors though the vet says it's unlikely.

I will check out Feliway. I appreciate the suggestion.
