Concert update

Last night the family headed to Jones Beach Theater to see Pepper, Offspring and 311. This was vastly different than most of the concerts we've been going to lately. All three bands were much younger and the crowd reflected that, with the average age being in the mid 20's. Since we tend to see classic rock bands or 80's bands, we were some of the older people there. A young girl in her late teens kept looking at the four of us, trying to figure out what three old geezers were doing there with a teenager. Bree was sitting still at the time but I was happily bouncing along to Offspring so the girl smiled at me and nodded, figuring out that at least I was there for the music and not just a chaperon. I'd forgotten that wonderful energy that comes from a 20 something crowd at a concert. Although we now know what the stoners are listening to these days. At least they were all smoking good shit in our section. :)

Pepper was a good lead off band, with a reggae alternative rock sound that I really liked. Offspring was up next and they were the band I was really there for and they didn't disappoint. They played lots of good songs including some of my personal favorites like "Pretty Fly For A White Guy", "Why Don't You Get A Job", "The Kids Aren't Alright", and "Come Out And Play". There was also an awesome moment when there were 5 drum kits on stage and each member of the band were drumming in unison. Then Dexter Holland had a piano brought onstage and performed a moving and beautiful performance of "Gone Away" that made me very happy for lots of reasons. I didn't know much of 311's material but I enjoyed quite a bit of it. By the time they hit the stage, the horrible Friday that was my day and the two beers I had while we were tail gating in the parking lot caught up with me. I admit I dozed through bits of their set. They aren't really my style but I was happy to just watch the very happy crowd.

I was sort of out of my element for this concert and still had a very good time. Monday, however, will be like putting on well worn, comfortable clothes and settling into a favorite chair with an often read book because we are heading to Madison Square Garden to see IRON MAIDEN! UP THE IRONS!!!

joy, music
