Expected/Unexpected

I've mentioned before that I listen to SomaFM's Indie Pop Rocks! channel because it plays a lot of music that a) I like and b) I've never heard before. Often I'll check the bands I hear out on Spotify and then if I like them, I'll buy the album (Support musicians! Buy music!).

I generally don't buy physical media (other than filk) because, let's face it, I travel too much to use it and I'm just going to rip it to my iPod anyway. Better for the environment and better for me if I just buy a download. The downside is that you don't always get the booklet that comes with a physical CD, the sort of thing that has lyrics in it. For the bigger bands, those are usually google-able, but a lot of these are smaller and more obscure.

So, anyway, I fell in love with this one particular song on the album, and decided I needed to learn to play it. Except I couldn't fully understand the words to one section of the chorus and that bothered me. Well, the band has a Facebook presence, so I sent a message and asked if they could tell me the lyrics. The lead singer originally messaged me back and said she had an electronic copy that she'd find and send me, but later said that she couldn't find it, but she was willing to send me a CD insert instead, and thought it might be fun for me to get mail at my new place in London.

When I got home from work yesterday, I checked my mail, and there was an envelope from the US! It contained the CD insert, a very nice note from the singer apologizing for the condition, as it had been their touring display copy (and had been in 31 states). And that was pretty cool and I immediately shot back a selfie taken from my balcony of me holding it up with the lights of Canary Wharf in the background.

But there was one other thing in the envelope and I'm...a little surprised, I guess. Because the other thing in the envelope was a Chick tract. Which isn't something I'd expect to get ever, much less from a band that is not, as far as I can tell from their lyrics, particularly religious. I almost feel bad about tossing it in the recycle bin.
