They sell this sort of band thing at Target that you just wear over your normal jeans waistband to give it a sort of maternity waistband. You can use it with any pants. Maybe investing in one of those would help? I dunno. :P

I knew a girl who used to wear skirts as shirts while she was pregnant. She'd just hike them up like tube tops. Heehee. :P

I got one of those already, and it totally doesn't work for me at all. I'm carrying really low, and I'm high-waisted, so it keeps hiking up, and the bottom rolls up like crazy every time I sit down.
It's also too soft and stretchy, and totally not strong enough to hold up my jeans on it's own, but I know I have the right size. :/

I like the elastic-hairtie method of holding up pants, but being 5'10", it's hard to find shirts long enough to work with it. I tried wearing the band over pants with a hairtie, but it didn't keep them covered, since it kept rolling up.

I think I might invest in some maternity leggings or something so I can just make some empire-waisted flowy dresses to wear with leggins and big stompy boots. It's too cold to wear dresses without leggings now.

Well now I totally know what to knit and throw in the package for you - a belly warmer. :) (baby cozy?)

That reminded me of when I used to knit at work (in a warehouse). Whenever I'd get started, guys would ask what I was knitting that was so small. I'd say it was a taint cozy. Heh.

There's something to be said for maternity clothes that are comfortable. I think it's really important. I bought stretch pants and very loose T-shirts while pregnant because I couldn't tolerate the way maternity clothes were made. They give you plenty of room for your growing stomach, but they make other areas so tight (esp around the arms) and they leave indentations in your skin. I hated that and was always so uncomfortable.

I have 2 pair of maternity jeans and a pair of maternity capris from the thrift store (it took me months to find that much!). They're comfy, but they don't stay up, so I'm always pulling on them. It's so annoying.
I just can't imagine spending $50+ on a pair of new maternity pants, knowing I'll only be able to wear them for 5 months. :/
Mostly I just wear my yoga pants or Geo's pajama pants and regular stretchy t-shirts at home, and then change into the jeans when I go out. The regular shirts from Target are just as long as the maternity shirts I've seen at Motherhood, and 1/4 the price. They'll probably be really stretched out by the end of my pregnancy, but if I got maternity shirts, they wouldn't be very useful afterwards anyway, so I'm not too worried about these ones stretching out.

I didn't buy any of my maternity stores at name brand stores. They were either given to me by cousins that were done having children or I got them at the thrift store like you did. There's a Pamida near here that would sometimes have clearances on maternity clothes and I was able to pick up a pair of comfortable pants for $5. I also got some from Goodwill, but those were uncomfortable.

It can be hard to find comfortable things to wear while you're pregnant but it's totally worth it, and I'm with you on the cost portion of it. It's just not worth spending the money on an item you're not going to wear very long.
