Laughing nervously, Haknyung steers Ryeowook away from the kitchen and into the living room; but not before hearing Sungmin's, "You better come back and eat my danhobak, hyung!" ---
When Shiwon comes in one of the dorms, he finds everyone there.
Confused, he turns to Shindong, who is closest to him, and who was the one who opened the door for him, and asks, "Is something special happening today?"
Eyes not leaving something at the corner, Shindong answers, "Oh yeah. Isn't Hankyung hyung great? I asked him what his self-image was a while ago, and did you know what he said? He said the most amazing thing! His answer totally blew me away! I mean, I knew he was smart, I didn't think he was that smart! And his face, ah, his expression was so humble and meek and ugh. You should have been there when I asked him! Hankyung hyung was so--,"
"Uh, hyung?" Shiwon interrupts, getting even more confused by the second, "What are you talking about?"
Finally, Shindong's eyes leave whatever it is he had been staring at in the corner and says, "Huh? What? What was it you were asking anyway?"
Shiwon blinks. Then he frowns and shakes his head. He knows how weird everyone of them are, but this is just going waaaay overboard.
What in the world is going on?
He walks further in the dorm, glances at the corner Shindong had been looking at, and realizes that it is the door to Hankyung's room. Brows raising, he quietly pads towards the room, reaches for the doorknob to open when,
"HALT!"
Surprised, Shiwon turns around and sees Donghae there, holding up a STOP sign in front of his face. "You are not allowed to go in there. It's protocol."
"Is this a new game?" he asks, "And where's Hankyung hyung anyway?"
With a salute, Donghae nods as he answers, "Hankyung hyung's in his room. He locked himself in when we started fighting who he should be sitting next to while we were eating. And yes," Donghae continues, nodding again, "It is a new game. Or, we're going to start a new game. All the people are involved. Hyung can join if he wants to."
"What do we get when we win the game?"
At that, Donghae drops his police-guise and adopts a sleazy grin. "Why, a date with Hankyung hyung, of course."
Brows raising even higher, if that is possible, Shiwon doesn't even hesitate when he says, "I'm in."
---
The first step to their game is, of course, to coax Hankyung out of his bedroom.
"Hannie!" Eeteuk yells, knocking incessantly on Hankyung's door, "Come on, we won't do anything, okay? We were only fooling around a while ago! Promise"
"I don't believe you," comes the muffled reply from inside the room, "I'm going to stay here, where everything's safe. And where I can make believe that everything's normal!"
Outside, Eeteuk sighs, and shakes his head and faces the eleven other boys waiting. Going to the living room, where Hankyung can't overhear what they're discussing, he says, "No use. He won't come out like this."
"Why don't we just leave him alone for a while?" suggests Shiwon, "Maybe he'll forget about it tomorrow?"
Beside him, Shindong shakes his head, "We can't leave him alone! He'll starve to death locked inside his room all day! He didn't even eat breakfast! And there's no water in there! How can he survive without food and water?! We have to save him!"
"You're overreacting, Shindong," Heechul says, rolling his eyes, "Look, we'll just have to wait. He'll come out when he's hungry. He won't kill himself over something like this."
"Are you sure, hyung?" Donghae asks, eyes wide with worry, "I mean, what if Hankyung hyung really won't come out even when he's starving?! What if we did traumatized him so much that he won't come out to see us anymore?! What if--,"
Eunhyuk laughs, interrupts Donghae's rant with a friendly arm around the other boy's shoulders, "Hae, if Hankyung hyung won't come out of his room, we'll just have to ask the spare keys from manager hyung to open--," Eunhyuk stops, then blinks owlishly as he looks at everyone's equally shocked faces.
Immediately, grins appear on their faces.
"So," Eeteuk asks, "Who wants to go first?"
---
The rules for the game are,
"No one, absolutely no one is allowed to, erm, touch Hankyung in certain places, all right?" Eeteuk says, "And no kissing, too. That would be part of the prize."
"The only thing we are allowed to do is woo him, seduce him, sweep him off his feet with our words, whatever," he continues, looking firmly at everyone seated around the living room, "The point is, you win if he agrees to go out on a date with you. We can have as many tries as we want, but only once per day. We stop the game when he says yes to someone, understand?"
At everyone's nod, Eeteuk smiles. "Well, let the games begin, then."
---
Heechul had been right after all. By mid afternoon, Hankyung warily peeks out of his room, and, finding no one there, hesitantly steps outside. Cautiously, he glances left and right, ears trying to pick up the smallest noise, the smallest evidence that his "friends" are still there.
Convinced that everyone has gone out, he walks towards the kitchen, intent on satisfying his poor stomach. When he reaches the kitchen, however, Hankyung finds Shindong there. He hangs by the entrance, trying to gauge if Shindong had turned back to normal. Observing, Hankyung watches Shindong eat, blinks, begins to salivate and throws all caution to the wind. He may have been traumatized earlier, but his stomach calls and that is a call he'll never say no to.
Shindong notices him, smiles normally and says, "They're all out, hyung. It's just us, I'm afraid," offering him a sandwich, Shindong asks, "Want some?"
Hankyung laughs, thanks the younger man, takes the sandwich and eats it. To his delight, the sandwich is heavenly. Unconsciously, he moans, eyes closed in pure bliss. Smiling wide, and with tears in his eyes, he looks at Shindong, grabs the other man's hands and proclaims, "Oh my god Shindong, I LOVE YOU!"
Shindong laughs, strangely uncomfortable. Hankyung notices, about to ask why, when,
"Hyung," the other interrupts, uncannily serious, eyes directed straight at Hankyung's own, "If that's how you feel then I--,"
"Wait a minute," Hankyung almost yells, Aren't they back to normal yet?! And, wasn't it all just a game they were playing to tease him again?! "Shindong, I didn't-- I mean, I mean it, but not in that way!"
Pouting, Shindong asks, "What do you mean not in that way?"
"In the way you're thinking, of course!"
"What am I thinking about anyway?" standing up, not letting go of the elder boy's hands, Shindong implores, "Hyung, I just want to be with you forever! I promise I'll make you hundreds, no thousands! of sandwiches a day! I won't let you go hungry, hyung, I'll keep on making food for us, for you! I'll learn all the dishes that you like, and I'll serve them to you everyday, without fail! Hyung," he says, eyes playful and pleading and hopeful all at once, "Will you go out with me?"
Obviously, his "friends" are not back to normal like he'd hoped, and prayed, while in his room. Laughing nervously, Hankyung gently takes Shindong's hands off his own, sighs and says, "Hey, why do you think you like me anyway?"
"Because!" Shindong answers; biting his lip, he continues, "...just because."
"Shindong," Hankyung tries again, sitting down beside the other boy, "Come on, tell me. What is it that you like about me? Because last I checked, I wasn't anywhere near your type."
Insistent, Shindong shakes his head, frowns and yells, "Of course not! I-I like you! You-You're funny, when people understand you. You can speak well and you can make others smile just by being there. And when you walk in the room, everyone cheers up immediately. You think of the most amazing dance steps and everyone looks up to you for it! And, Hankyung hyung's well-built and muscular and your body is so slim and lithe and fluid and graceful and and, just, perfect! That's why I--,"
"Shindong," Hankyung says, smiling comfortingly as he can, trying to ignore the things said about his body, "I'm not like what you said at all. What you said, aren't they all your traits?"
"Hyung, I'm not thin--,"
"And traits you want to have?"
Shindong stops speaking, and he looks away. Silence hangs in the room for a while, and then, encouragingly, Hankyung slings an arm on Shindong's shoulder, shakes him up a bit, chuckles and says, "You don't need to think about wanting all those traits, Shindong. You already have all of them."
"But I'm... chubby and... un-idol-like and--,"
"It's all just how you perceive yourself to be. All of us," Hankyung says, softly, "We all like you just the way you are. You brighten a room with your smile when you walk in. You make everyone laugh with your wit and humor. You create awesome dance steps and choreography. And, you can make an entire crowd happy just by being yourself," leaning back on Shindong, Hankyung continues, "It's about self-image, Shindong. If you look at yourself and find you're happy with that, then everything's going to be okay. No matter what criticism you get from people, it won't matter if you think positively about yourself. What's important is how you feel about yourself. And because you seem to doubt it, I'll tell this to you just one more time," gripping Shindong's shoulders to make a point, Hankyung smiles, "You are already prefect the way you are."
With that, Hankyung stands up, pats Shindong's back, grabs the plate full of sandwich, and goes out of the kitchen, leaving Shindong with his thoughts.
When the sound of Hankyung's footsteps vanish, Shindong sighs, shakes his head, and smiles.
And then, remembering their game, Shindong considers about telling Hankyung. But he pauses, thinks for a second, and figures there's no need to.
It's just much more fun that way.
And besides, he does love Hankyung, right? Shindong doesn't know how or why or even when it began, but there's this huge feeling in him that had been pushing and convincing him relentlessly that he does love the elder boy. He wants to think about it, and at the back of his head he knows it's strange, but the feeling he gets when Hankyung's around... well! There's just no words!
If Shindong's honest with himself, he might have thought that what's happening to him is kinda a lot like... well, magic.
