He nodded briefly at her acceptance. Good. One thing taken care of. Especially with Pansy back in town, he had to assert his preferences, and if he didn't, Pansy would simply assume and Daphne wouldn't have a chance. She'd come back into his life first. He wanted that chance.

Besides, Daphne made something flutter. Pansy didn't. Or at least, he didn't think she did.

"No, they shouldn't. I hope they will." Though he prayed to Merlin, Circe and anyone else listening that that wouldn't mean Potter at their table as well.

"If not, I'll be heading to talk to them nonetheless."

He noticed she hadn't said anything. Not believing her views changed, he at least was accepting that she was trying to curb her outward reaction. Well, it was a step.

Not that he was serious about her, but it was always a good thing to know.

"That's understandable." She nodded.

"I know this is a odd question for a guy, but... do you know what you'll be wearing?" She couldn't hold back a small laugh at her own question and rolled her eyes at how silly it must sound.

Again she muffled her laugh, but this time in her drink. It was an odd question, but she liked fashion and the question hadn't even made it into her mind before it came out. It seemed when she held in other opinions, certain screened small talk got by the filters that told her this person wouldn't care.

He nearly did spit juice at that comment, but he smiled in reaction. "Dress robes. Of course. Formal dress robes." He never understood the female obsession with dress. Not that he didn't appreciate the effort they went through for him, or for any man. He simply didn't understand it.

"So, to counter," not that he cared, but it was expected, as was complete attention over the answer, "You? What will you be gracing the Wizarding World in?"

Daphne smiled that he was indulging her girlie question. It was probably bred into him to do so, though.

"I found this beautiful blue-green chiffon gown while shopping yesterday. One of a kind by this amazing Italian designer named Belial Hatta." Her eyes glistened with excitement over the dress. It had been one thing Augustus had bought for her and she couldn't wait to wear it.

"I think this pin with look good on it, though." She smiled again.

"Do you think you'll participate in the silent auction? My mother had wanted to donate some things but she has a bad habit of forgetting about deadlines."

He noted her enthusiasm to wear the trinket. It hadn't meant that much to him. He was rather amazed it meant that much to her. Exactly what had she taken from this gesture?

He decided he didn't want to know.

"I imagine I'll purchase something. Noblesse oblige and all that," he drawled. In truth, he hadn't thought about the auction. He'd barely thought past just showing up. Just putting his face there, knowing he couldn't hide away.

His image of the gala was he, his father and Severus snarking in a corner. With a sigh, he realized that would not happen.

"As far as donating? No, I think they only want my gold, nothing else. After all, I'm a Malfoy...tainted, remember?" he sneered.

"Oh, yeah. sorry forgot," she replied sarcastically, a mischievous grin crossing her face.

"I like going to these events to see the dancers." She looked down at her plate, not seeing the food but the light bounce off the plate.

"Dancing makes everyone look graceful and all thoughts are melted away as you let yourself just be. You and your partner become the only ones to exist... no troubles, no worries... just a sort of floating in a fuzzy place somewhere away from it all."

She was the true hopeless romantic when it came to dancing. Though she had never wanted to date or connect with anyone, when she danced she lost her worries and it all didn't matter anymore.

He smiled at her commentary. Indeed, dancing did tend to make things easier. Though he'd never voice such commentary.

That she was that romantic though, caused mixed reactions. It comforted him, but it alarmed him nonetheless. He couldn't risk romance, not for true.

But you already have. She's already there.

Draco squashed the thought immediately.

"Well, I'll simply have to ensure I make my way to dancing with you then. After all, I wouldn't want you to forget about me for the benefit of some undesirable Weasley or something."

He smirked, finishing his fruit.

Daphne about choked on her grape laughing.

"Yeah, because that would happen. Most of them are imbeciles."

Coughing several times, she took a sip of her drink. "Ow.."

"But, yes. I'll ensure to keep room on my dance card," she teased.

She actually didn't know if anyone else would ask her to dance; maybe Augustus but she didn't really associate with many guys otherwise.

"Only most?" He smirked more.

"Now, I got to start your day. Where are you going before Pansy's little thing?"

He wasn't comfortable with her heading to Pansy's, especially without him, but that could not be helped currently. He was not looking forward to Pansy hearing that he'd been courting Daphne.

He was what? Shit.

"Pansy is taking me shopping for a dress." She smiled. She loved shopping.

"Actually..." She glanced at the time. "Oh Merlin... I'll never hear the end of it. I'm late."

Daphne sighed, but didn't actually move from the table. Drinking the last of her juice, she looked up at Draco through her fringe.

"You sure you can't show up?"

He shook his head briefly. "No. I can't. But enjoy it nonetheless."

He stood up and took her hand awkwardly, then leaned in and brushed her cheek with the barest of kisses.

"Don't be too late for her. She'll have both our hides." For more reasons than one. If she knew how much he liked Daphne, they'd never hear the end of it.

he wanted to push that as far off as he could.

Daphne sighed.

"Right." She smiled at his light kiss and let his hand guide her to her feet. She walked back through the house to the door.

"I'll see you at the gala then." She kissed his cheek at the door and walked out to where she could apparate to Honeyduke's.

Dancing the dance...
