Millicent hated working Saturdays. Truth to tell, she wasn’t overly pleased with her Auror training course of assignments at the moment. She had been sent to assist the Misuse of Muggles Artifacts Section and couldn’t imagine any use whatsoever for anything or anyone muggle, let alone devoting anyone’s time or energy to protecting them from magical use or harm from magical items. Still, she was convinced that every assignment would have an eventual use for her or her associates, even if this one only identified potential muggle fodder for future mistreatment.
She was highly vexed that she’d not been allowed to participate in raids to keep Dark magical items out of the hands of muggles or wizards. Now there was a task she was quite suited to both in training and taste. She’d dropped several hints to Dolores Umbridge at their last tea that she would be receptive to such an assignment; however she considered it unlikely that the Under Secretary would interfere in standard Auror assignments, especially when the simpering sycophant had merely patted her hand and encouraged her to persevere.
“Anything to assist the Minister, Millicent. You must continually strive to act always for his best interests. We all serve him in our own way with each assignment, no matter how small.”
Millicent had cringed inwardly but been quick to agree and promise her diligent service.
She had noticed an air of concern about the Ministry of Magic. It was nothing tangible, but it pervaded each level she visited and seemed to indicate a coming change. She wondered if the time were ripe for some clandestine or even more overt activity and wrote a quick note in her journal to test the waters outside the Ministry.
She set aside her current paperwork and headed for the lifts. It was time for a walkabout wherever there might be interesting conversation or activity in the Ministry. Millicent did her job, but never lost sight of her real reasons for devoting her time to this place.
