Guests arriving at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kenmare, Ireland for the wedding of Seamus Finnigan and Charlotte Aurelius are met by one of the two older brothers of the Finnigan family, Francis (Frank) and William (Will) and escorted to their seat inside the main sanctuary. Kenmare sits at the crossroads of the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Beara and near the Irish coastline. The church is adorned with Charlotte’s choice of fresh Irish wildflowers from the surrounding Irish countryside. The flowers are tied with cream coloured ribbons and bedeck all the alters, pulpits and each row of pews within the church. The church is also replete with brightly burning tapered candles that cast a warm glow on the happy proceedings.
Fading sunlight from the end of a lovely day illuminates the beauty of the prized antique stained glass windows. Holy Cross was consecrated in 1864 and its parishioners are rightly proud of their lovely historic church with its intricate gothic stonework and finely wrought windows. Traditional and classical organ music greets the early arriving guests, wafting from the hidden pipes and lending an ethereal nature to the proceedings.
As the time of the wedding service nears, the tenor of the music changes, alerting the guests to the arrival of the principals. Frank and Will were supposed to escort their Mother, the formidable Beven Finnigan to her place at the front of the church, but as Seamus walked out to the front of the church he saw that his father Cian was escorting his mother as his brothers walked behind them. His brothers then joined him at the alter, leaving him wondering who was here to escort the bride. Had her brother Conall appeared? The nervous groom Seamus Finnigan, turned anxious eyes towards end of the aisle.
Strains of Vivaldi greeted the arrival of the matron of honour, Fleur Delacour Weasley, as she preceded her schoolmate and dear friend Charlotte down the aisle to await the bride’s arrival. Next came Alice and Socrates, matching white dogs in the Finnigan family carrying rings for the light-hearted couple. That brought more than a few snickers from the crowd, especially when both of them went to stand next to Fleur. They looked like canine bridesmaids in white matching dresses and she gave them each a treat for their trouble. Father Rory looked by turns askance and as if he would bring an immediate stop to the proceedings if the animals misbehaved. Seamus saw his mother give the priest a very firm look of determination and wondered if all of the guests could hear his resigned sigh of acceptance as clearly as the family at the front of the church.
Charlotte, secure on the arm of her brother, Conall Aurelius arrived at the rear of the church and the welcoming strains of a familiar Bach cantata accompanied their approach to the alter.
