"You what?!"

Tonks had just landed her broom a good couple feet away from the Wood cottage when Auror Carson came trotting over to tell her the news. Obviously not impressed she let her broom fall against the side of the house then stood, hands on hips, waiting for a better explaination.

She hadn't even known that Severus was here and now she was being asked to leave Hogsmeade and the main search party to escort him to Knockturn Alley.

Did he really think he might dig up some news of Wini there? Work had taken Tonks that way on various occasions and while it wasn't her favourite place in the world and the idea that somebody there might know where Oliver's little girl might be gave her the creeps like nothing else did but if Serverus thought that the visit might prove useful then Tonks was hardly going to argue ( ... )

Severus watched her approach, impatiently, while critically examining her attire. It was probable that she, like everyone else here, had dressed in a hurry without concern for appearance.

Thankfully, as an Auror, he knew her transfiguration skills had to be very good, which was fortunate since his were decidedly not.

"By the sour expression of your countenance, I presume you have been informed of your delightful 'assignment'," Severus observed with a drawl.

He waited until she was closer, that he could speak in tones unlikely to be overheard since there was no one visible near-by.

"I don't have any idea beter than anyone else, where the child might be found," he admitted with frustration. "However, it seems unlikely that she is going to be found near-by at this juncture. With all the search parties and Homing Charms being tossed about, if she was here, she ought to have been discovered already.

"Therefore, I must assume that she has either been so entirely devoured by some unknown creature as to leave nothing to be found - a ( ... )

Did she understand?

Barely, but that was enough for her and so she gave a simple nod. He might be able to go on explaining forever but the sooner they got whatever Severus had in mind set in motion the better.

She was never going to understand him and the fact that he needed to warn her on to essentially 'turn a blind eye' was the proof of the pudding.

"I don't doubt there's a vast different between what you and I consider unconventional, Severus, but right now my efforts are to concentrate on getting Oliver his daughter back."

An Auror was something Tonks hadn't felt today, not even from the start. Work hadn't called her to Hogsmeade, Oliver had and although she was working with her collegues from the Ministry in the search she still didn't feel as if on an assignment for them ( ... )

Severus eyed her critically as she did whatever she did to alter her appearance. It was sufficient, though it could be better.

"Can you alter your gender?" he asked, as much out of idle curiosity as anything. It would be easier not to draw attention if she was male. Few women ventured into the areas he was headed of their own free will, no matter what their physical appearance or magical prowess.

Still, the nondescript appearance would work well enough. She was with him, and little comfort though she might take in that fact, his reputation preceded him, considerably. No one would dare offer her any offence ( ... )

Well. That was most disappointing. What was the entertainment value of baiting her if she wasn't going to bite back?

Of course, it was impossible for Severus Snape to recognise or acknowledge that his verbal baiting and sparring was every bit as immature and attacking, in its own way, as Wood's earlier physical assault.

The need for privacy was over, or at least he had divulged all the 'sensitive' information he intended to for the time, so he dropped the wards and stepped out of the alcove, once again leading the way toward their destinations, though taking more than usual care not to stalk away from her or walk faster than a comfortable pace.

He snorted derisively at her question, but answered it - there was no shame in the truth.

"Wood and I had a bit of a difference of opinion," he replied haughtily. "As he fails to possess the reasoning capacity and vocabulary spectrum beyond the average ten-year-old Muggle, he felt the need to communicate his side with more primitive methods."

Tonks rolled her eyes. "Can you really blame him? If he approached your or you- whatever way round it was," She shook her head, indicating that she didn't really give a toss which way around it had been. "and you were in this kind of mood, well-" She gave a rather lifeless laugh herself. "yeah, don't blame him at all, professor."

He had the ability to do that, drain the energy and enthusiasm from her so swifty by simply being in her presence. Tonks had no doubt that he likely gave many others the exact same feeling. He'd had it back when she'd been in school and he still had it today.

"I- er," She spoke in hushed tones, trying to kill the cloying atmosphere and attempting to satisfy her curiosity in one fell swoop. "seems a horrible clash that this should happen so soon after the full moon," She dug her hands into her pocket as they walked. "how is h- are they?"

Oh, now could this possibly be more awkward? Severus had no idea the extent of her relationship with Remus, or lack thereof, but Remus had said on several occasions that he had broken off because he could not return her sentiment. Now, here she was, Remus' former... girlfriend? Lover? Asking him, Severus, about Remus' well-being, completely unaware of the present standing between Remus and himself.

The mean, nasty, sadistic bastard side of himself wanted, very, very much to reveal the truth of the situation in as cruel a manner as possible. To tell her that Remus was cheerfully sharing with Severus the hot, passionate kisses he could not even force himself to give to her.

Consideration for Remus' feelings prevented him from doing so, despite the almost overwhelming temptation ( ... )

Tonks gave a slow nod.

She hadn't known that either of them were at Olivers. If she had she'd have sought them out without a second thought on the matter. However, this endurance potion Severus spoke of worried her. She knew that times of the full moon were hard on the pack as it was and while it was silly to assume that Remus and Perry would have just sat back during a situation such as this, she couldn't help but let her concern show in the deep frown which crossed her features.

And since when did Severus call Remus by his first name?

It wasn't like him to address many people by it, although she seemed to be one of the few, but only because he seemed to take so much pleasure out of addressing her as Nymphadora. The sodding git. He knew she hated her first name with a passion and he played on it at every possible opportunity ( ... )
