Severus wasn't the only one doing the avoiding. The last few days had passed in some deep soul-searching for Remus. Ever since he'd had the truth of his own reactions thrust so suddenly upon him Tuesday, he'd been careful to stay clear of all but the most professional of interactions with the Potions Master ( ... )

What was with this bloody werewolf and his apparent aversion to a respectable amount of clothing? Then again, few besides Severus Snape were so downright prudish as to find the exposure of long, slender toes, narrow feet, and ridiculously appealing ankles as positively 'indecent'.

Glittering black eyes took in his appearance in one slow sweep - Severus refused to allow his gaze to linger on the nimble fingers doing up the buttons at Lupin's throat. The damp hair clearly spoke of a recent shower - how odd to think they might have been showering at the same time - and how absurdly childish to consider such a notion as though it had any significance!

His fingers did not tingle with the memory of what it had been like when they had carded through the thick hair as Lupin was doing now; when he was supposed to be assisting Poppy in her treatment of Lupin's injuries, yet his traitorous libido was not completely silent, even then ( ... )

Thankfully, his face had the good grace to wait to flush under that slow gaze until after the ther man had swept into the room. Remus kept his face averted as he closed the door. Taking his time, while trying not to look like he was taking his time, to allow his skin to cool before turning to regard Severus curiously once more ( ... )

For an instant, something highly inappropriate had been on the very tip of his tongue as Lupin appeared to be at a momentary loss for words.

'See something you like, werewolf?" had almost spilled thoughtlessly from his lips.

He certainly did not want to hear Lupin's answer to that nonsense! Especially as the werewolf mentioned having a 'hot date', and he felt something freeze painfully inside his chest. The sensation abated slowly once he realised Lupin had been joking with him.

"Well, if you had rather, I would not wish to interrupt your interlude with Michael," he said dryly, lifting a brow as he caught a glimpse of the book. It was one he had not read, nor even heard of, so of course his curiosity was instantly alight.

It was then that he recollected that Lupin probably still thought he was 'with' Myron Wagtail, even though he had not seen the younger man in weeks. In that very amicable meeting he and Myron had agreed that there was nothing 'romantic' between them, and it had been surprisingly not awkward or painful ( ... )

His breath caught in his chest when Lupin winked at him, but he covered his reaction with a sardonic roll of his eyes. Severus had no intention of letting him 'win' that argument - though the idea that Lupin was planning on pursuing the subject was intriguing in and of itself. For the present, however, he was most interested in ascertaining what Lupin's... for want of a better word... inclinations were, and if there was any remote hope of directing them towards himself.

Severus had always believed the man to be wholly 'straight' - on those rare occasions when he had given the matter any thought - and only Lupin's willingness to kiss Myron Wagtail - and the apparent enjoyment he had gotten out of it, had caused him to consider alternate possibilities.

To that result, he was watching the other man closely. Wasn't that an interesting reaction?

Nothing escaped the sharp, observant eye of the consummate spy. Especially not when he was specifically looking for just such 'symptoms' as the werewolf was displaying ( ... )

"You have to admit, 'Marauders' did suit our activities rather aptly." Remus chuckled lightly, trying valiantly -- and succeeding just barely -- not to fall into those midnight eyes.

The thing was, Remus had always believed himself straight as well -- until that one kiss with Myron. It wasn't that there had ever been a moment he fancied himself attracted to Myron in the same way he was to Severus. It was more that in accepting that kiss from his friend, Remus' eyes had been opened to the fact that he was, essentially, a creature of earthy pleasures. Whether the wolf provided that or merely enhanced his own natural proclivities, it was still true ( ... )

"I could think of many more appellations far more apt, at least for two of your little club," Severus countered dryly, still feeling too amused and (relatively) at-ease to truly raise to ire for no real reason.

Alas, 'self' would not be allowed to dominate this conversation, no matter how much he might strive to keep the outside world away, if even for a few short hours. Stifling a weary sigh, he leaned forward to move his own piece on the board at last, while listening to Luping's concerns.

"If not you, then I would not know who could," Severus said in agreement with this unknown 'alpha'. Something dark and ugly swirled inside him, and he recognised the distasteful miasma of jealousy. She wanted Lupin's protection! Was she young? Beautiful? Intelligent ( ... )

"Yes, she had mentioned that to me briefly before leaving for her training. Only in passing. I had not realized she was already looking to pursue it now that she's been back ( ... )

"You and Ginevra would have to work that out between you. She's a Gryffindor, I doubt she would refuse to accompany you, regardless of potential danger. Indeed, I rather suspect that danger lures Gryffindors like ants to a picnic," he said sardonically.

There was no sting in the comment, though, and he was rather alarmed to find himself considering the severe character defect with something like fond indulgence, which was as distressing as it was shocking. Just because he fancied LUPIN did not give the entire House a pass!

Those uncomfortable musings were quickly forgotten as Lupin continued speaking, and his relaxed complaisance fell away as he swelled with indignation.

"What are you talking about? Who else would you trust to brew it?" he asked, clearly highly affronted. "You are being ridiculous! What is one more cauldron? That happens to be my area of expertise, Lupin ( ... )

"Severus! I am not questioning your ability." Sighing, Remus went ahead and made his move with very little thought, his mind on so much more than chess.

Unbecoming was not the word Remus would have used to describe the expression on the other man's face. Endearing, adorable (if Remus was suicidal and asking to be hexed, at any rate), (much to his current discomfort) kissable even; but certainly never unbecoming -- at least, not when the pout was on Severus. Remus could honestly say he'd never noticed a pout on another man before. Had he noticed when some women pouted? Absolutely. Having 'Dora pout at him was almost guaranteed to bring a chuckle and earn her a friendly hug ( ... )

Oh.

Well.

That was quite all right, then. He hadn't been insulting Severus. He had been trying to protect Severus, in a way. That was entirely different. He couldn't recall if anyone had ever actively tried to defend him before, and he found the experience surprisingly tolerable.

Virtual 'ruffled fur' settled at once, as the pout became a rather self-satisfied smirk.

There was that lip-biting and the hand through the hair again. Remus was unsettled. Why? Because he thought he had insulted Severus? Captivating as Severus was coming to find those little 'tells' of discomposure, he felt it was necessary to put the other man at ease again, lest the game be cut short out of misunderstanding.

"Very well, then. We are quite agreed. There ARE no other remotely acceptable alternatives," he almost purred.

Hmm. In spite of the fact he was almost preening, he had to admit (at least to himself) that was probably a bit of an exaggeration. There had to be at least a handful of competent brewers in the UK who were capable of ( ... )

Remus made a mental note that he was obviously not qualified to be dealing with the conniving side of his Slytherin 'ally'. He had his own streak of mischief -- he could hardly have been James Potter or Sirius Black's friend if he didn't!. But, he had never found this level of deviousness, as Severus described it ( ... )
