The street outside of Padma's flat was quiet, the streetlights shining dully on the road. Piles of leaves lined the gutters and curbs, oranges and browns and reds all mixed together to create a burning autumn palatte. There was a small pop in the alley beside the building, and a cat hissed and tore off from behind the garbage bins in response to the intruder. Parvati hushed at it and went to the front, letting herself in through the heavy door.
Once outside the right flat, she paused. She knew her twin would have locked and double-locked the door. She stood outside for a moment to compose herself. Lavender was missing. There was a Dark Mark above the Leaky Cauldron. Magical Law Enforcement had quaranteened the place. Lavender was missing. She was just feeling the weight of it now, her blood slowing and her breathing returning to normal. Her head was pounding and her legs were sore, but most of all, she felt that tears were about to engulf and drown her.
"Padma, it's me!" she whispered loudly, giving a little knock. She didn't want to cry in the hallway. She wanted to cry in her sister's arms.
