It was getting light again. The house wasn’t clean, but it was quiet, finally it was quiet again. Wrapping her arms around herself she stared out over the grass and watched the green start to glow.

She’d failed. Her aim had been to create something to show Harry and Neville just how important they were, just how much she loved them. But like everything else she tried, like everything else that she needed to do she failed.

The stench of failure clung to the curls in her hair and every inch of her skin. It was spread across her skirt and into her shirt. It edged down her throat and expanded so much she had to fight back the urge to gag.

Clenching her jaw, she bit back new emotions, but they continued to swirl in and covered failure in a way she wasn’t even sure it was there anymore. It wrapped warmly around her and held her safe. The new anger and resentment for those who were too good, who thought they were too good to just smile. They wanted her to fail, too feel like nothing.

Harry wanted her to feel like a nothing, the nobody he thought she was.

Hermione Granger had put up with many things; she’d suffered many things. And as she stared out of the grubby window, she decided that sunsets were no longer enough.

Turning away from the pink of the sunrise, she shook her head. "Happy Birthday to you..."
