it's been a pretty eventful week... here's the recap of last saturday:
i went to toronto to hang out with sarah (one of my former housemates from hamilton). we went to see two shows at the
fringe festival; dogs! the musical!, which was written by, directed by, and starred four mcmaster alumnists, three of which i was acquainted with, and my script and me, which featured
whathaveidone, a.k.a. mario. the two shows just happened to be playing back-to-back that afternoon.
dogs! was funny at times, but mostly because i knew the people in it, and my sense of humour is very similar to one of the guys in the play (a former artsci known as "drama dave"). unfortunately, while all four of them are dramatically trained, only one was really vocally trained, and a musical with only one trained vocalist can be pretty grating at times. :op i am, however, impressed that they wrote, produced, directed, and starred in the show, just the four of them. their website can be found
here. it was clever and well-written, and was all-around a pretty good production as far as amateur theatre goes. as soon as i heard dave had written a musical about dogs, i knew that the bad yet funny dog puns would abound.
my script and me was a little bit of a cheesy concept; a young writer struggling to write a script that's due in a few days... second-guessing himself, even just debating what genre of story to write. however, it was well-written, well-acted, and well-staged. one character was a little voice in the back of the writer's head that acted as his conscience/self-doubt, and that acted as the antagonist. and mario played the wonderfully over-the-top european artiste arch-nemesis (and whore), davide. the fucking part might as well have been written for him, and i still maintain that it must have been. it was mostly semi-cliched themes of reflection, self-discovery and the like, but all done well, and very entertaining.
ultimately, dogs! was funny mostly just because i knew the people in it, whereas my script and me was genuinely funny, and i would've enjoyed it whether i'd known anyone in the cast or not. i'm glad i got to see both of them.
afterwards, sarah and i joined mario and some of the my script and me cast for beers at the fringe beer tent. we shot the shit, had some laughs, and then sarah and i went for dinner at futures restaurant, which was nearby. mmmm, yummy wings. i've had lots of wing cravings lately, and i don't know why. then we went for bubble tea, i drove sarah home, and then drove home myself.
on my way home, just around the corner from my house, there was a guy asleep on the sidewalk... in a residential neighbourhood. at like 2am. it was rather odd.
so there sarah, now you can see how real life experience translates into blog. :op
PS - i was going to make some clever comment above involving how the world looks through my "blog-goggles" but then i gave up cuz it just kept sounding stupid.
