Meta: Jack/Ianto and Lurve, that old chestnut.

Notes: There may be bits of this that aren't 100% serious, I hope they are obvious. As to canon, I am counting all the television episodes, and the radio plays, not the books and other media. (I think the books get a little confusing and I know some people don't count them, so I won't) I also am well aware that the plays were written after CoE, but ( Read more... )

If anyone doubts GDL's brilliance as an actor, just look at all of us, almost three months after Ianto's death, still finding nuances and interested in discussing them. He took what was essentially a throw-away role and fleshed it out into one of the most complex and lovable fictional characters I've ever known.

I agree with the people above who mentioned Ianto's capacity for unconditional love; that's another reason I'm furious with RTD and JG for saying that he had to die so Jack could sacrifice Stephen. If Ianto had lived he would have hated that Jack had to do it, but would have stood with him without flinching and given him the strength to go through with it, because Ianto was not going to stop loving Jack while he lived.

And I too find it hard to understand the people who didn't believe that Jack loved him in CoE; Jack was pissy and didn't say the words, but showing is much more powerful than telling, and he showed it with his eye contact, facial expressions, and other behavior, not just as Ianto was dying.

One last point, about The Dead Line monologue: remember that Ianto's voice broke when he talked about Jack's leaving again in the future, "And this time you won't be back." Talk about foreshadowing! At least he never left Ianto.

Yes indeed! I agree with everything you say. I also think RTD and JG gave piss poor reasons for Ianto's death. It was just lazy old fridging.
