EVICTED
By Carol Davis

They’ve got one hour to get all their stuff out of the apartment, the landlord says.  Dean does it in eighteen minutes.  When Dad pulls the Impala up in front of the building, finally back from wherever he went to do whatever it was he had to do, Dean is sitting on the curb, holding Sammy’s hand.  Their duffels and pillows and blankets and a box of Sammy’s toys are piled neatly alongside them.

"Dean?" Dad says, but Dean doesn’t want to answer him.  Silent, he opens the car door and helps Sammy climb up into the back seat.

“What?” Cassie says.

He should stop, he knows that.  He should turn it into a joke.  Tell her he’s kidding, ha ha, okay?

But he doesn’t.  He keeps going.  Stumbling a little, he gives her the abbreviated version of what they do and why.  When he says “we” he means himself and Dad and Sam, because Sam will come back one day.  He has to.

He holds back only one thing.  He says nothing about Mom.

“You should go,” Cassie tells him, and her beautiful face is ugly with disgust and betrayal.  “I don’t want - I want you to go.”

Sammy’s not even looking at him.  His attention is all on her, the bitch, and it doesn’t matter any more whether she’s Lilith or Ruby.

Nothing matters any more.  They couldn’t stop this.  Pretty much, Dean understood that months ago.

This isn’t what he meant when he told Henriksen he’d go down swinging.  He’s not swinging, he’s crawling - not that that’s getting him anywhere - and he’s peed himself again, he thinks.  But maybe it’s just blood.

He looks past the hellhounds so the last thing he sees on this earth is his brother.

G’bye, Sammy, he thinks.

And lets go.
