Kahlan had often imagined the moment she and Richard would become parents. And now, as she held their newborn daughter in her arms, she looked at Richard and couldn't help the tears that filled her eyes. "I always dreamed about this, but never thought it would actually happen," she whispered.
Richard gently kissed her, brushing the tears that had fallen away. "Believe it, Kahlan. You, me and now our daughter are a family."
She smiled as a knock sounded at their door. "Come in," Richard called.
The door opened and in walked Zedd and Cara, anxious to see the new arrival.
"Oh, she's beautiful, Kahlan," Zedd told the new mother.
"What did you name her?" Cara asked.
Kahlan smiled. "Elizabeth Cara."
Cara looked from Kahlan to Richard, clearly surprised. "You named her after me?"
Richard nodded. "Yes, we did."
"But why?"
"Because without you, she wouldn't even be here," Kahlan told her friend softly.
"What do you mean?"
"Cara, do you know how many times you've saved their lives?" Zedd asked.
Cara shrugged. "Once or twice?"
Richard shook his head. "No, Cara. I lost count a long time ago, but I know none of us would be here without you."
Cara nodded, unable to say anything around the lump in her throat.
"Elizabeth, I think it's time you met your godmother," Kahlan told her daughter, gently placing the newborn into Cara's arms, who instinctively started rocking the baby gently.
Kahlan smiled at Richard and nodded. They'd made the perfect choice.
"Welcome to the world, Elizabeth," Cara softly told the child in her arms with a smile.
