"I want to buy you a ring," Castle told his wife as they lounged on the sofa of their New York City apartment.
"Castle, you know how I feel about that."
"Come on--"
Beckett shook her head. "No. I don't need a ring to know how you feel about me. It sparkles in your eyes whenever you look at me." Her words caused a brief smile, but it was short-lived.
"Beck--ett," Castle whined, little boy pout firmly in place.
"What, Castle?"
"Please?"
Beckett sighed. What was it about this man that she had so much trouble telling him no? She looked up at him, amusement flashing in her eyes, but what she saw there sobered her. He looked almost...hurt. "It's that important?"
Castle nodded slowly. "Yeah, it is," he whispered.
"Why?"
"Because somehow, I fell head-over-heels in love with you and I want the world to know you're mine."
She nodded. "Okay."
"Really?"
She smiled. "Yes."
The grin that lit up his face lit up her heart. "I love you, Beckett."
She reached over and touched his face tenderly, running a finger down the side until her hand came to hold his face in her palm. "I love you, too," she told him.
He smiled and turned his head slightly, kissing her palm. He captured her lips with his own, her arms winding around his neck as he carried her to their bedroom, intent on showing her just how much he adored her.
The next evening, Castle came home, positively beaming.
"What are you so happy about?" she asked softly.
He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small box. He handed it to her with a smile. "Open it."
Beckett slowly lifted the lid of the box. "Oh, Castle," she whispered.
"Do you like it?"
Nodding, she looked up at him, tears glistening in her eyes. "It's perfect."
Castle gently took the box from her and withdrew the princess-cut diamond solitaire from inside. Taking her hand in his, he slowly slid the ring onto the third finger of her left hand. It was simple and elegant, just like the woman who wore it.
A single tear fell down her face. "What's wrong, baby?" he asked, tenderly brushing it away.
She shook her head. "Nothing. It's everything I never knew I wanted," she admitted. "Just like the man who gave it to me."
Castle smiled and lowered his lips to hers, capturing her lips with his. He slowly backed her against the wall, never breaking contact. He pressed his body fully against hers, continuing the kiss. His hands found her waist and the zipper of her jeans before she took his hand and led him to their bedroom to finish what he'd started.
