Saying goodbye to Haley was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do--second only to telling Jack that his mommy wasn't coming home. He didn't know who had cried more that day--Jack because he missed his mother or him because he missed his best friend. The moment they put her in the ground, he knew. He knew their lives would never be the same again. He knew something incredibly special had been taken from them much too soon.
He cried not just for himself, but for Haley. For all the things she would miss. Jack's first day of school, his graduation and wedding days, their grandchildren, countless birthdays and holidays, family memories they'd never get to make. He ached to hold her one more time, to tell her how much he loved her, how much he always would.
But in his heart, he knew she already knew. She always had.
