Castle was growing more and more anxious the closer they grew to Jim Beckett's house. Kate noticed. "Relax. You know he already loves you and thinks of you as part of the family. This will just make it official," she told him, squeezing his hand.

He nodded, but relaxed only slightly. She just smiled and shook her head in amusement. They rode the rest of the way in silence, both lost in thought.

Twenty minutes later, they pulled in front of the house Kate still loved. So many of her fondest childhood memories were made right here in this house.

Kate slipped her hand in Castle's as they made their way to the front door and knocked. A moment later, Jim Beckett opened the door with a smile. "Katie! Rick!" he exclaimed, stepping aside to let them inside.

"Hi, Dad," she greeted him, pulling him into a hug once they were inside.

"What brings you out this way?" he asked as they sat down in the cozy family room, decorated just as it always had, just eh way her mother had furnished it all those years ago. With timeless elegance.

"Dad, we have something to tell you," she told him.

"Is something wrong?" he asked, worry furrowing his brow.

Kate smiled and he relaxed. "No. Everything's fine. More than fine, actually."

"Good. So tell me this good news then," he laughed.

Kate squeezed Castle's hand and said, "Rick asked me to marry him," she told him, holding out her left hand where a diamond ring adorned her left hand.

Jim's eyes lit up. "Oh, Katie, that's wonderful. Congratulations," he told her, rising to his feet to pull them both into a hug. "I'm so happy for you both."

"This is probably the most pointless thing I'll ever ask, but promise me one thing, Rick."

Castle nodded. "Anything."

"Take care of her, love her. And never forget to tell her."

Castle smiled. "I promise. I adore her more than life itself."

Jim nodded. "I know."

Jim looked at his daughter. "I have something I want you to have. I'll be right back."

"Feel better?" Kate asked.

Castle nodded, letting out a sigh of relief. "Much."

Jim returned a moment later and handed Kate a long, slim box. "What's this?" she asked.

"Open it," he told her.

She carefully lifted the lid as tears instantly filled her eyes and memories to her mind. There lay her mother's pearl necklace and earrings. She had always admired them. She'd borrowed her mother's jewelry from time-to-time as a teenager, but these had always been off-limits.

"Oh, Dad. Are you sure?"

Jim smiled. "She always intended on giving them to you to wear on your wedding day," he told her softly. I gave them to her to wear on ours."

"Thank you," she whispered, caressing them, almost reverently.

"If you're even half as happy as I was with your mother, then you'll be a very lucky woman indeed." Jim kissed her cheek. "Happy Birthday, baby. I love you."
