Notes/Warnings: Definitely set pre-Serenity (the pilot). The idea for this is kind of shamelessly ripped off from a scene in a favorite movie of mine called "The Whole Wide World" - well, Wash's remark about moustaches and Zoë's reponse are, anyway. The exact wording of the original quote is a bit different, and is taken from Rudyard Kipling's The Story of the Gadsby: "Being kissed by a man who didn't wax his moustache was--like eating an egg without salt."
"You bother me," the first mate said, fixing him with what he guessed was supposed to be an intimidating stare (and it normally was), but considering her drunken state - and the fact that he was a bit tipsy himself - it somehow came off as slightly less-than-menacing.
"Must be my boyish charm," he said airily, stroking his moustache proudly. Zoë grimaced and took another swig of her drink.
"That - that thing is awful," she said, staring at it as if she expected it to jump over and bite her. Wash bristled indignantly.
"I've been told it's very..." he paused, searching for the right word, "...majestic."
Zoë suddenly leaned in close, inspecting the "thing" in question through narrowed eyes. She must have overestimated her sense of balance, though, because she had to place her elbows and forearms quickly on the table to prevent herself from falling into his lap.
"Told by whom?" she asked, wrinkling her nose. She was so close now that he could feel her warm breath against his cheek. He resolved to remain perfectly still, having learned the hard way not to make sudden movements around Zoë.
"Women, of course," was his response. "They say kissing a man without a moustache is like eating an egg without salt."
He smirked at her. She leaned closer, and he licked his lips in anticipation.
She stared at him a moment before speaking. "I like my eggs plain," she said, kicking back the rest of her drink and leaning back in her seat. She missed the disappointed look on his face as she shuffled out of the booth and stumbled towards the door of the bar without turning around.
