Kris was sitting on the couch in his LA apartment when the ground started to shake under him. It only took a split second for him to hear Adam's voice, back when they roomed together on Idol:
"Don't stand in a doorway. That's a myth. The best thing you can do is get down, take cover and hold on."
"Katy!" Kris called. "Get down! Get down where you are, underneath something and hold onto it! Do you hear me?!"
And just like that, he heard her voice, thin and panicked from somewhere else inside the apartment.
"Kris! I don't want to be alone!"
But Kris just closed his eyes. He felt dizzy. This wasn't anything like what he thought an earthquake would be. Him barricaded underneath their kitchen table. Katy, somewhere else. Maybe under a bed, or the computer desk.
"Kris!"
"Stay where you are," he insisted, as things crashed around him. The coffee pot fell off the counter and shattered. Dishes in the sink rattled, and Kris prayed that none of the dishes in the cupboard would fall and break.
And then, just like that, it was over. He heard footsteps thundering toward him, and Kris stayed curled beneath the table, not entirely convinced that the earth had stopped moving beneath him.
Katy crawled in beside him. Both of them shook as they held onto each other.
"A picture fell off the wall..." Katy offered breathlessly.
"It's okay. Are you okay?" he asked.
"That disgusting one of us in high school. I don't even know why we still have it," she rambled.
"I like that picture," Kris objected weakly, pulling out his phone and calling Adam.
--
"Hey. Are you okay?" Kris asked.
"Yeah. Why?" Adam wondered, perplexed.
Kris was silent for a second. "Are you kidding? My life just flashed before my eyes and you don't have a clue why I'd be asking if you were okay?"
"Aw..." Adam said, voice full of sympathy. "You were scared of the earthquake? That was just a little one. Are you okay?"
Katy grabbed the phone from Kris before he had the chance to respond. "That? Was the longest twenty seconds of my life! I may never set foot outside again!"
"Oh, you two..." Adam said sadly, with a smile evident in his voice. "It's really going to be fine, okay? I promise. I've lived here all my life. That wasn't bad. Just be prepared for aftershocks, so they don't sneak up on you," he advised.
Katy stared at Kris with wide, alarmed eyes.
"I think this is a perfect place to hide out for a while," Kris said to the floor.
"No, honey, the bedroom's better! I read somewhere that if you're already in bed, to stay there, and just cover up with blankets and pillows," she offered Kris a shaky smile.
"Sorry, Adam. We gotta go...move to a secure location. Wait out the aftershocks," Kris mumbled hurriedly.
"Yeah, I heard all about your secure location," Adam laughed. "Don't be afraid, okay? And if you need to call, call. I'll always get back to you."
"All right," Kris answered, hanging up quickly, to follow Katy into their bedroom.
Kris stepped carefully around the broken glass of the photo of them, years younger and without a care in the world. He joined Katy in bed, wrapping his arms around her.
"I hated being alone," Katy whispered, shedding a few tears in spite of her best efforts to keep herself together.
"You're not," Kris reassured her. "You got me. Always."
Glancing out the window at the blackness of night, Kris shuddered at the memory of the shaking ground. Then he held Katy tighter. California was turning out to be one freaky place. It'd be better just to stay inside forever.
He stared at Katy under the blankets, breathing in the scent of her.
Then again, why would he want to go anywhere at all?
This was perfect.
