There’s always a place for you in Silver’s galley, Silver says the first time Jim asks if he’s in the way. There always if, of course. Every day - early in the morning before breakfast or late in the evening when Silver’s prepping for the next day - Jim winds his way to the galley and sinks, exhausted - because Lord does the squire run him ragged - onto a stool near Silver’s worktable, and he steals bits of apple and listens to Silver’s stories and rests his aching head and shuts his eyes and feels warm and comforted, and his stomach feels full.
