Summary: Nakamaru is ready for just a tiny bit of change.

Winter is finally over, and it has been for some time now, because it’s the hot part of spring and Nakamaru can barely fight how frizzy his hair gets. It’s annoying, but he’s survived worse; besides, that means he can take a nice vacation. Maybe somewhere with a view. Maybe definitely the beach, regardless of his frizz issues.

Once he gets home from filming Shuuichi, Nakamaru gets to work. He’s going to find the best place; this time somewhere where he’ll see more than a brick wall from his room. That’s always the worst. Perhaps for this trip, he can have company. It’s been a long while since he’s gone anywhere with Massu; it hasn’t been long enough since his trip with Taguchi. Skydiving-- honestly, what had even made Taguchi think that that had been anywhere on his list of things to do, ever?

However, when Nakamaru consults Massu, their schedules don’t line up in any way possible for them to go anywhere. Nakamaru doesn’t mind going alone; he’s done it before, but he feels like he’d like to have company this time. A knock at his front door startles Nakamaru from his pondering, and he leaves his laptop open to answer it.

When he opens the door, Ueda is on the other side, hands shoved in his pockets. Nakamaru doesn’t say anything; he steps aside to let the other in.

“Yuichi,” Ueda says in greeting, kicking off his shoes and making his way to commandeer the softer half of Nakamaru’s couch. He spots the hotel search that Nakamaru’s abandoned for the moment, and he sounds serious when he glances up and asks, “When do you want to go?”

Nakamaru sits down, taking a moment to work out the dates in his head. “Soon? I was just trying to figure out specifics, you know.”

“Well, don’t you worry about it. We can go together-- I’ll do all the planning. But don’t expect to get away without paying for my dinner at least once.” Ueda smirks and then kicks his feet up onto the coffee table, subject dropped in favor of television.

Weeks later, Nakamaru has almost forgotten about his trip. It’s a complete surprise when Ueda knocks on his door again, a small duffel bag in hand. Nakamaru lets him in, cringing at the way he kicks his sandals off, and locks the door behind him.

“So, Yuichi, got your bags packed?” Ueda flops onto the couch and waits.

“No?” Nakamaru really hadn’t been expecting company.

“Then I suggest you get some things together, before I do it for you. I wanna head out soon.”

Nakamaru heeds Ueda’s suggestion; he’s terrible at packing, and Nakamaru doesn’t want to iron while he’s on vacation. As quickly as he possibly can, Nakamaru rolls up the necessary clothing, with plenty of spare underwear, and packs his bag. He’s just finishing gathering up his toiletries when he hears Ueda yell from the living room.

“You need your phone charger!”

Nakamaru does, and he grabs that too, stuffing it into the pocket of his jeans. He’s a little breathless when he gets back to the living room, and Ueda just grins at him as he stands. “I’ll be driving; you just get to relax, Yuichi.” He tosses a sleep mask at Nakamaru, not unlike the one he had gotten for their last game corner, and leads the way to his car once Nakamaru’s double (and triple) checked that the door is properly locked.

Ueda takes Nakamaru’s bag from him and tosses it, along with his own, into the backseat. The last thing Nakamaru sees before Ueda adjusts his mask for him is his impish smile, and he can’t help returning it. He settles back in his seat, relaxing enough to doze off.

Hours later, Nakamaru is shaken awake. “Come on,” Ueda whispers, voice soft as if he isn’t trying to wake anyone. “We’re here.”

Nakamaru stretches and stifles a yawn as he shoves the mask up. The sun is low in the sky; it’s close to dark, the first stars peeking out as the last mottled orange sinks below the waves. They’re right next to the beach, certainly much closer than Nakamaru has ever managed to procure on his own. He looks around, taking in the scenery; it’s actually a little breathtaking. Ueda’s voice cuts through his awe and returns him to the present.

“I’ve already taken our stuff inside. I hope you’re hungry, because I am.” With that, Ueda trots from the car to a house that Nakamaru hadn’t noticed. It’s a little small, but cozy-looking; Nakamaru follows, still looking all around himself.

He pauses inside the door to slide his sneakers off. Across the living room, tidy and brightly lit, Ueda is standing at the back door, impatient as he beckons Nakamaru over. He hurries, wondering why Ueda’s so impatient; when he sees the expanse of deck bridging the house and the beach, Nakamaru is surprised. It’s lit with little lanterns, and there’s a table with two chairs in the middle of it. A spread of little sandwiches takes up most of the table; the whole setup is charming.

“What’s all this?” Nakamaru can’t help asking; usually Ueda’s efforts are messy at best.

“Thought you’d like it,” Ueda says, unable to look directly at Nakamaru. That’s a first.

“I do,” Nakamaru answers. He can’t help smiling at the thought Ueda’s put into everything, and he pulls out one of the chairs, offering it to Ueda. It’s only fair, considering everything he’s done to put together this trip.

Ueda takes the offered seat, lounging back after he’s reached for a sandwich. Nakamaru sits down, comfortable in the silence as they eat and watch the stars come out. They don’t speak for a long time, not until the moon is high in the sky and it must be late; Nakamaru’s practically forgotten all about his phone and charger.

“Hey,” Ueda murmurs, breaking the silence. “Wanna go for a walk?”

Nakamaru gets up, brushing his fingers along Ueda’s shoulders in response. They walk side-by-side down the few steps to the sand, arms brushing together even when they have enough room to spread out. It’s a little like how they used to be, practically attached at the hip, and Nakamaru thinks about when they were younger.

That’s how they were back then; these days, they have obligations that cut into the time they’re able to spend together. Nakamaru is glad that this time, Ueda had come with him. It was nice to be surprised.

Abruptly, Ueda stops, grabbing Nakamaru’s hand. They’re near the water’s edge; the waves are a soothing lull and the moon shines brightly. Ueda tugs at Nakamaru, urging him to lean down. “I’ve got something to tell you,” he says.

Nakamaru barely leans forward when both of Ueda’s hands curl into the collar of his shirt and pull him down. The next thing Nakamaru knows is Ueda’s got their lips pressed together, kissing him as if it’s a requirement for life. He almost can’t believe it, but Ueda’s teeth barely scraping his lips startles him out of it.

“Stop thinking,” Ueda says before licking his way into Nakamaru’s mouth. Instead, Nakamaru focuses on how soft Ueda’s lips are against his own, and then he actually does stop thinking so hard.

Ueda’s knuckles are rough through the thin material of Nakamaru’s t-shirt, but his touch is gentle. One of his own hands finds it way into Ueda’s hair, holding him in place even though Nakamaru knows Ueda won’t be going anywhere.

Nakamaru’s lips part, and in the next instant Ueda’s tongue is twining with his own. He doesn’t know how long they stay like that; too soon they break for air. He doesn’t have time to be disappointed, though, because Ueda is smiling up at him, almost outshining the moon. Nakamaru can’t help smiling in return; it’s his turn to make a suggestion.

“Maybe we should go somewhere more comfortable, even though it is beautiful here.”

Ueda looks intensely pleased as he follows Nakamaru back to the beach house. Nakamaru is, too. It had been a perfect idea to go on a trip, especially one that had been a surprise in more ways than one. Nakamaru can’t wait to find out what else is in store for them, even after they return home.
