Slash rating:
This fic is a beautiful, gentle foray into the “autumn” years of Sherlock and John. Readers of “retirement” fic won't be disappointed and those who are reserved about dipping into this particular genre will not find anything squicky. There are also references to the original works which will please those who enjoy that aspect of this fandom too.
Told from John's point of view, the writer presents a John who is completely in character with the man we see in the series, albeit a little older. His insecurities about how Sherlock feels towards him and his frustrations of being unable to participate in the chase any longer are cleverly intertwined with the ageing/Autumn theme of the story.
The writer captures Sherlock's acerbic tone wonderfully, every line that he speaks is with the voice of BBC Sherlock. When he gives his assurances to John that they will remain together, in his usual indirect way, the reader is treated to a very powerful piece of prose, perhaps leaving you thinking, yes, that is exactly how Sherlock would say that to John. The writer brilliantly conveys the fact that Sherlock is there for John, to support him, in his own way (perhaps not as often or as demonstratively as John might prefer), but these are all nice subtleties of Sherlock's character that we also see in the BBC version.
The beautiful descriptions bring to life an evocative scene of a damp British Autumn day perfectly and this nicely juxtaposes with John's mood. It is romantic, but not saccharin. There are a few instances of non-Brit usage but these are not really too distracting as the story flows at an excellent pace and the writing style is very engaging.
To sum up, if you're looking for some John angst but with the perfect balance of Sherlock being not too cold (or too sweet) then this story is definitely worth reading. The only downside is, it is reasonably short-although it is the right length for this particular story-so it's not one to choose if you're in the mood for an epic!
