Hurt/comfort is a very popular genre in fandom as we for some reason do love to hurt our boys. It is therefore also a genre where stories sometimes have a hard time being separated from the pack. The genre doesn't always lead up to the biggest amount of storytelling as one more or less battered protagonist being taken care of by another until the former is well again could, and often does, comprise the whole story.

What sets ”Comfort to the Enemy” apart from your average fanfic does not so much lie in the story as in the storytelling. It's a simple story, but the descriptive passages are what distinguishes this author from the rest. The prose is never too elaborate but every scene is still drawn with such attention to the details and the characters that it leaves a mirrorclear image in your mind.

While I said the story is simple, the characterizations are not so. The characters all feel fully fleshed out and while the physical hurt is dedicated to Castiel who has been almost torn apart after a meeting with an archangel in Chuck's house, both Sam and Dean wrestle with their own problems that impact on their trip towards safety. Sam has just released Lucifer and is guiltridden as well as detoxifying from demon blood and Dean is trying to come to terms with what his little brother has become as well as trying to keep them all safe. The story isn't big on action but focuses instead reaction and we are skillfully drawn into our three main characters reactions to their new circumstances.

This is a gen story, but it should be overlooked by neither Dean/Castiel fans as there is plenty of friendship on offer nor Sam fans as sea_wren paints an intriguing picture of the youngest Winchester trying to come to terms with what he has done.
