Author warnings/summary: None. I swear, I’ve had a damn good think and can’t come up with a single thing to warn for. Apart from perhaps an overdose of festive fluff, and more OCs than you can shake a stick at.
Sherlock takes John home to meet the extended Holmes family.
Author’s note: Thanks very much to innie_darling for very helpful beta comments and suggestions (particularly Evander’s job title!). The title comes from Thomas Campion’s poem ‘Now Winter Nights Enlarge’. Lastly, this whole thing is pretty much entirely due to Mycroft’s throwaway line at the end of A Study In Pink. I’m sure you all know the one I mean.

This is a Seasonal fic which sees Sherlock invite John to his family home for Christmas. Whilst not an original idea in this fandom, the author portrays an amusing and very readable interpretation of the Holmes' family. The story moves along at a good pace, from John coming under the Holmes' family scrutiny, to Sherlock and John realising their feelings towards one another are returned, through to a well-written, realistic and inevitable sex scene.
Told from John's point of view, the author conveys very clearly John's bewilderment and his feelings of being overwhelmed as he meets some of Sherlock's relatives, who are, for the most part, high-powered and highly intelligent. The family members are likeable, interesting chars, albeit a little stereotyped, but the use of over the top names for all of them was somewhat grating. However, this is done for a reason, which is to good humorous effect.
The author has chosen to write the members of Sherlock's family (certainly those that John meets) as demonstratively loving, approachable, emotionally available characters. In this fic Sherlock does appear to have some emotional involvement with family members and this is where he seems to be most out of character from the BBC version. Whilst his family is obviously a subject open to interpretation, it might then have been prudent for the author to give some indication as to why BBC Sherlock himself does not seem to share any of these particular familial traits.
The detailed description in the kissing scenes is a particular strength in this fic and even the most seasoned slash reader may find these scenes so well done it's almost like reading one for the first time! The following intimate scenes are also extremely well-written. Sherlock's impatience is evident and balances nicely with John's steadfastness.
Overall, the story is charming, gentle and easy to read. There are a few grammar errors and a couple of instances of American word usage, but these are easily overlooked. If you like fluffy fic, with a sometimes sweet Sherlock who likes post-coital snuggling then this is a good one to read at any time of the year.
