While the title of
twisting-vine-x's fic, “A Romatic Interlude Beside The Pacific”, might lead you to think of your average fluff fic, what you get is almost the complete opposite. It builds on the episode “Like a Virgin” and the strained relationship between Dean and Castiel that we've been seeing in season six. Sam has his soul back and Dean now wants to try and repair his broken relationship with Castiel, but the angel is still fighting for his life in Heaven and feels that Dean does not take the war seriously. Dean, on the other hand, feels that Castiel still doesn't understand the importance of Sam in Dean's life and the lengths he'll go to to save him.
twisting-vine-x does a really beautiful job of showing us the push-pull relationship between Dean and Castiel through their actions and conversations. Castiel's abrupt manner and Dean's belligerent one feel very true to what we've seen in season six, and their portrayed relationship feels realistic and in keeping with the show. Both men (or man and angel, rather) are stubborn and angry, neither of them willing to back down on what they believe is important, and they often end up pushing the other away despite intentions of the opposite. Even the sex between them acts like an extension of the story, further demonstrating the complicated relationship between Dean and Castiel and though the author warns for smut there is not an excessive amount of it.
There are few grammatical errors, easily overlooked, although solider instead of soldier did make me grit my teeth as that is one I often stumble across.
If you want a story full of fluff and romance you should skip this one. If you instead want a realistic look at how a relationship between Dean and Castiel might unfold, twisting-vine-x's fic is a solid offer.
