While the author states that this story is slash, it would be a shame if it deterred gen-only people from reading it as it is an excellent piece of fiction that contains very little slash which is easily overlooked.
The plot of
oatmeal_queen's “525,600 minutes” really rises above your average work of fanfiction. The foundation of it, a simple amnesia plot, might be cliché, but
oatmeal_queen builds so beautifully upon it and offers up such interesting original characters that she moves away from the cliché and claims it as her own. While the reader is quickly clued into the fact that the nameless person in the beginning of the story is Castiel, the real mystery lies in what happened, not only to him and the Winchesters, but to the entire world as well. Castiel's fragmented memory leads him on a road trip across America where he is slowly presented with pieces of the puzzle. The fact that the reader is discovering all this at the same time as Castiel keeps the suspense high all the way to the end.
Oatmeal_queen takes time to build up her world, but sometimes it feels like the pacing is a bit too slow. She often uses -ing forms, slowing down the pace of the sentences. Other times the meaning or the direction of a sentence is unclear, either because she's used the wrong word or phrasing or because the sentence itself has become too long and over complicated. Apart from these problems, “525,600 minutes” manages to keep its reader engaged through a well-defined and satisfying plot and beautifully rendered original characters.
