Jayne's not used to being quite like this. Considerate, he can manage -- ain't no fun when your partner ain't having fun too, after all, s'why he can never figure out rapists and Reavers since there seems to be no fun for anyone there. An' there's an element of "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours": he ain't averse to brushin' a lady's hair or being all sweet to her if it'll get him somethin' in return, and sometimes that makes it more fun.
But with Kaylee... He doesn't care whether he gets anything back, when he does something for her -- the smiles he gets are almost enough just in themselves, or the hugs, Kaylee style hugs that might crack a lesser man's ribs. And sometimes he just gets the urge to touch her -- brush her hair back, steal a kiss, sneak up behind her and wrap his arms around her... brush their hands when they pass things to each other, sit with their knees pressed together under the table...
It figures, that Kaylee's special. She always has been. And Jayne, surprisingly, doesn't mind. It's not like he's suddenly turnin' into a dandy like the doc or anythin', just because he's figured out a little bit of romance. The day he does that, now, that's different. Then he'd have to shoot himself. Or somethin'.
But bein' nice to Kaylee really ain't so bad.
