“The weirdest thing happened,” Drake said. They were home, finally, Hollywood adventures over, and sitting on the couch watching television.
“Huh?” Josh said. “You mean, aside from being kidnapped by evil counterfeiters and driving Tony Hawk's car? And, oh yeah, performing on TRL.”
“Yeah, aside from that,” Drake said, either not getting Josh’s sarcasm or choosing to ignore it. “This guy kept coming up to me and saying weird stuff, you know, at the studio.”
“You mean Tony?” Josh asked.
“Dude, I don’t know,” Drake answered. “I didn’t ask his name or anything. He was all, ‘You could be such a good role model for the community,’ and I tried to tell him I don’t live in L.A., but he wasn’t really listening. And he kept staring at me. It was creepy.”
Josh winced. He’d been kind of trying to keep it a secret; he was sure Drake was going to take it badly. “Yeah, that sounds like Tony. He’s a production assistant.”
“Oh, so you know him,” Drake said. “What’s his deal, man?”
Josh considered a lie, but he was so bad at it, and his mind went blank. So he went with the truth. “Well...he kinda thinks you’re gay.”
Drake stared at him, then exclaimed, “What?”
Josh shrugged. “I tried to tell him, but he was sure we had some secret love thing going on.”
“Brothers,” Drake said.
“Stepbrothers,” Josh mumbled. “We didn’t talk a lot or anything. Just, he thinks you should, uh, come out of the closet or whatever. Um. And he thinks I’m real lucky to have you.”
“Hell yeah,” Drake said. He ran a hand through his hair. “No offense, but I am way out of your league.”
“Well, since you’re not gay, it’s a moot point.”
Drake raised his eyebrow. “You’re not gay, either.”
“What?”
Drake poked his shoulder. “You said I’m not gay, but you’re not gay, either.”
“Oh,” Josh said. “Um. Sure.”
“Dude!” Drake exclaimed. “Are you, like, gay for me?”
Josh was pretty sure his heart stopped, which couldn’t be healthy. There was a rushing in his ears. He wasn’t sure if he was going to burst into tears or hysterical laughter, so he settled for taking a deep, gulping breath. “Of course I’m not,” he said.
He always was a bad liar, especially around Drake. “Dude!” Drake said again, sounding almost annoyed.
Josh felt like he was losing his mind. He was sure Drake could hear his heart beating over the TV. There were too many feelings swirling around his head, all covered with a thick candy coating of terror. Then Drake leaned over, closing the distance between them, and pressed his lips to Josh’s.
Josh moaned. He couldn’t help it. He couldn’t move, either, just lay back against the couch as Drake assaulted his mouth. Drake’s hand cupped his chin, and Josh finally got the motor function to reach up and rest his hand on Drake’s arm. Then Drake pulled back, and Josh couldn’t contain his sigh, his chest heaving.
“Whoa,” Drake said. “You are. You’re so gay for me.”
All the nice euphoria vanished, and Josh was left feeling like he wanted to take a razor to his wrists. “That was a test?!” he yelled, arms windmilling as he pushed off the couch and away from Drake.
“I--” Drake started, and then shut up when Josh’s fist collided with his face.
Josh took off running, face contorted in pain, and Drake shook off the punch and ran after him. He was almost to their room by the time Drake caught up, and Drake took a flying tackle at his stepbrother. They fell to the floor, and Drake landed on top, pining Josh.
“Get off me,” Josh yelled, pushing ineffectually at Drake.
“It wasn’t a test,” Drake said. “Well, it kinda was. But...”
“GET OFF ME!” Josh yelled again. Drake grabbed his flailing arms and held them down.
“I wanted to kiss you,” Drake blurted.
Josh could only stare at him.
“I...I’m not surprised that guy realized,” Drake said. “Man, Craig and Eric noticed. Mindy noticed. I thought you knew...I thought you just wanted to ignore it. ‘Cause you aren’t gay, and I’m your stepbrother, and...”
“I didn’t know,” Josh said. “I thought it was...” he took a deep breath, released. “I thought it was just me.”
Drake couldn’t help leaning down and pressing a kiss to Josh’s lips. “Not just you,” he said.
“Not anymore,” Josh agreed.
