Title: Between Friends
Author/ess: katherine
Series: X-Men
Length: 5 chapters, 9886 words.
Character/pairing: Jubilee, Logan/Rogue.
Rating/warnings: Rated R for mild sexual situations and a whole lot of swearing. Like, seriously. Set after X1, but no real spoilers.
Summary: Logan and Rogue have enough problems trying to work out their own relationship. They get help from best-friend Jubilee, whether they want it or not.

Back when I watched the cartoon series before school every morning, Jubilee was one of my favourite characters. Rogue was number one, and Gambit was up there (I ship them in comicverse; my Logan/Rogue kink is purely movieverse) but there was something endearing about toughgirl Jubes learning to fit in. She got the pointy end of the stick in the movies with a whole three seconds of screen time, but this fic puts her in the driver's seat and it's a refreshing, light read.

There's about ten million Logan/Rogue stories online, and many of them are just variations on the same angsty theme. While I'm fortunate in that I enjoy repetition, sometimes it's nice to try something different, and this fic is lighter in tone and from the POV of someone we don't usually see. Jubilee decides to look after her best friend, with or without Logan's cooperation, and through a number of sticky situations, Jubes is there for Rogue.

For some reason the last chapter/epilogue had a number of grammar errors, like your/you're, and some switching of tense. It's not enough to spoil the story and a solid vein of humour runs throughout the whole fic. I really liked the unshakable friendship we see between Jubilee and Rogue - all too often for this pairing, Rogue is a solitary, lovelorn figure who only thinks of Logan - and at the same time I loved the relationship between Logan and Jubilee. It's great to see a departure from the norm, and while a number of things were glossed over or unanswered, for a light, simple fic like this, we don't need everything explained. A nice piece of work.

Preview: "Who the hell does he think he is?"

Jubilee remained silent and simply continued to wait for Rogue to resume walking once again. They'd been outside for at least an hour, briskly walking the mansion's extensive garden paths and stopping every now and then for Rogue to have an angry outburst that made no sense to Jubilee. Every time she'd begun to ask what she was talking about, Rogue just shook her head in mute frustration and started walking.

This time, however, seemed to be different. For one, their feet seriously hurt from walking in heels, and for another, it was growing dark. Rogue sat on a stone bench overlooking a small pond and looked expectantly at her friend.

"Well? Don't you want to know what he did?"

Jubilee sat down beside her, popping off her shoes and stretching out her aching legs. "With Logan, God only knows."
