Title: Inspirations
Author/ess: graycardinal
Series: The Dark Is Rising
Length: approx. 839 words, one shot
Character/pairing: Will, with another character that I won’t spoil
Rating/warnings: PG
Summary: Long after the end of the series -- Will Stanton meets a stranger in an airport book-stall.

Again, I’m really not big on book fandoms, as I’m extremely picky when it comes to literature and so on. I’m also always a bit “meh” when it comes to OCs for some reason - probably because when I see it, they ruin the characters - but here, it’s unique and a great idea. Will meets someone, and they have an interesting chat on popular fantasy literature and the structure of magic, among other things.

I don’t really want to give this one away, because that’s part of the charm of this one. Granted, I had absolutely no idea who the stranger was, even after reading the reviews for this one, but the end itself is special and gave me a little shiver, even when I knew what it would be. And uh, I’m one of those people that don’t really like Harry Potter, so that little part of the conversation amused me and maybe made me a bit happy. It’s really interesting, the premise of their talk, because I hadn’t thought about the structure of magic in fiction before, and this inspires a bit of thought. Original, interesting, and something that you should check out.

Preview:
He had long since learned not to sigh aloud when he passed a Harry Potter display, but something - perhaps the twitch of a shrug in his shoulders, or the not-quite-suppressed momentary glance heavenward - prompted a woman to look up from the shelves near the end of the airport book-stall's aisle, and shake her head at him sympathetically.

"Not a fan, I take it?" she inquired, in a voice that blended the mellow cadence of the Irish countryside with a decidedly American accent. There was both friendliness and a touch of challenge in the question, and the two sets of contrasts awakened his natural curiosity.

"They're so - cluttered," he said, waving a hand at the display. "The magic goes off in all directions at once; there's no real consistency to it. And the plots are almost as messy. They're complicated for the sake of being complicated. And yet people keep buying them, and lining up for the films, and buying those when the discs come out. I've heard the author's richer than the Queen by now. It just doesn't seem . . . fair."
