Title: Destination Unknown
Author/ess: yahtzee63
Series: Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Length: 21263 words, three chapters. Multipart.
Character/pairing: Giles/Buffy-centric, some Angel/Cordelia and Connor. Mentions of past Scoobies and friends.
Rating/warnings: Future-fic set post-Buffy season six and Angel season three. Rated PG-13.
Summary: Six conversations. Five unanswered questions. Four people. Three relationships. Two continents. One big honkin' crystal from who knows where. No plot. You're warned.

So I think we've covered my attraction to Giles/Buffy. I'd rec a whole lot more of it if I could find solid, well-characterised stories that didn't turn into random make-out sessions involving wordy descriptions of Giles' manly, hairy chest. This fic, rather considerately, doesn't feel the need to expound upon Giles' masculinity, but instead gives us a wonderful look at a difficult relationship, and throws in some Angel and Cordelia for good measure.

yahtzee63 has never disappointed me, and this meaty and rather glorious romance pushes all my buttons. In a calmer future, Buffy is called to England to help Giles decipher the use for a particular crystal, and without the trappings of responsibility between them, their camaraderie becomes something else. Uncertain, Buffy returns to the US and talks to Angel, who is having problems of his own, what with two children and a wife and did I mention he's human now?

Oh, fabulous work. It's original and inventive and the Giles descriptions in particular are fantastic - he's not a young man, and he has valid reasons for trying to avoid this kind of relationship with Buffy. The Angel-reflection was absolutely spot on, and I loved all the little details - Connor wanting a new name, Buffy reading on Giles' couch, Giles' knee cracking when he sits on the floor. Truly, this is a wonderful read - yes, it's been Jossed, but AUs are fine - and I love to see something crafted with so much appreciation and care for what we know from the show. Beautiful and intelligent and so very honest - a fic that does this awkward ship justice.

Preview: "I don't want you hurt." Giles was reluctant to leave; to her surprise, Buffy found herself sharing in that reluctance. "We could find others to investigate, Buffy."

"No. I can do it, Giles," she pleaded. Let me prove myself to you, she thought. Even if it means I have to leave -- at least I can prove myself to you first.

Giles looked unconvinced, but finally he said, "If you need me --"

As he padded down the hallway, back to his own bedroom, she thought, If I need you.

When did I not?
