Summary: After losing Walt, Jin is the only constant left in Michael's life.
Walt is gone.
And he's left behind. A mess. A goddamn wreck. Falling apart - plain old falling - and there's no end in sight. No getting his boy back. His Walt. The son he'd always loved but never known.
It's - hard.
Hard.
Dealing with it. Coping with it. Soldiering on alone.
But the silent presence by his side tells him that he is not alone, however much it feels like it. Michael stares into the flickering fire that they're sitting next to so that he doesn't have to look at Jin. They're so close to the flames that he should be burning- but he can't feel anything but numb, dazed and cold.
It is impossible to tell how long he's been sitting like this - but he knows that Jin has been here for every single second.

He keeps waiting for the day that Jin will turn his back on him.
Everybody else has. Nobody else on the entire beach seems to give a damn that his son is missing - that his son was taken by the Others, even though he's innocent, even though he never harmed a soul. It's not fair; it's just not fair.
"We will find him," Jin promises -his words are jerky and uncertain, taught phonetically no doubt by Sun, but his hand covers Michael's and there is nothing unsteady about that. "We will find Walt."
Michael nods determinedly - because when Jin says it, he actually believes him.

The seasons change as much as they ever do on this stupid island. The days get hotter and the nights get colder and the storms hit more often that ever.
And Walt is still gone.
And Walt will always be gone.
There's a hole in Michael's chest, right by his heart, that he thinks will never be filled until he gets his son back. There's a piece of him missing, and he's not man enough to save him.

They have been on the island for four years, four months and two days when Jin kisses him.
Walt has been missing for four years, two months and twenty days.
And the frustrated feel of Jin's lips against his, of stubble against stubble, of scrambling hands… It doesn't make it okay, not nearly.
But, yeah, it makes it easier to cope.
