Grace opened her front door and looked at Adam, who was standing alone in the rain, his back facing her. “Rove,” she called, not sure if he could hear her through the heavy rain. When he didn’t respond, she pulled her jacket on and went to meet him. “What are you doing?”
Again, he didn’t answer but she knew he heard her.
“Adam,” she tried once more, this time touching his arm.
He jumped slightly then looked her. “I don’t really feel like talking,” he mumbled.
“Sure you don’t, that’s why you’re standing outside my house in the pouring rain.” She carefully pulled on the soaking wet sleeve of his hoodie. “Come on inside.”
He shook his head, turning away from her again.
“Fine, stand out here and die.”
He flinched.
“Sorry,” she mumbled then shrugged. “Whenever you feel like it, there’s a key-”
He cut her off, finishing her sentence, “under the duck.”
