FMLA applies after you have worked for a certain length of time for an employer and the size of the company. But you can take multiple short FMLA breaks. If you qualify to take FMLA with the company it does not have to be a huge chunk and can be small breaks here and there adding up to the total amount of FMLA leave but you do have to re-apply it under FMLA each and every time you use FMLA.

I only know this because this is what allowed my job to keep her job with SBC for over a year after she became seriously ill.

Intermittant FMLA does exist...I was able to take up to three instances per month (an instance could be 15 minutes or 8 hours) as long as I had time left. You only get 480 hours per year, but it's a rolling year, so if you took 8 hours FMLA today, you'd get those 8 hours back on February 16, 2011. You have to have worked for a company for a year before you're able to apply.

Yeah, so that's my problem #1 - I'm currently unemployed. I just interviewed with a company that gives a grand total of FIVE sick days a year. needless to say I can't live like that, so I have no clue what to do moving forward.

I would check and see if there is a disability work resource center (they go by various names) in your area - My dad used to work for one and what they do is match people with specific needs to employers who are both willing and able to meet those needs. It tends to work well.
Here in Canada there are various programs such as:

If you have trouble finding information - I'd suggest contacting places such as physical rehab centers as they likely have a lot of community resources on hand, as well as your city directory.

Good luck!

My state has a Department of Rehabilitation Services. You might see if they can help.

It might be hard to find a flexible workplace like that again. I work for the state (the state pays my pay but I work at a college library). I have a similar amount of sick days.

The only flexible options I can think of are work-at-home. Like Convergys in bound customer service at home. The other option is medical transcription, which a friend of my grandma does online from home. This requires paying for education though (The totally online program costs $2000 :( ). I'll put the link here just in case. http://spheris.com/

Oh wow, thanks for the medical transcription suggestion... I'm actually pretty interested. It sounds like something that could even be done part time. Awesome :)
