Why?

I've always been a brilliant flautist, and playing the flute is one of the main parts of my life. But now I can't play anymore because it hurts too much to hold my instrument. I've tried and I've tried and I've tried just to keep going and bear with the pain but it's too much. It's so bad now that I can't stand up after a few minutes and I can't ( Read more... )

Take some time off. I know it's hard--I had to stop doing a lot of things because of a combination of the fibro and various and sundry RSIs, including music. But the added stress about not being physically able to play isn't helping your mental or physical state right now.

Take some time off, take a break, and concentrate on figuring out how to improve your current condition. Once you've got a handle on what you can and can't *currently* do, figure out what is improvable, and work on that--then you'll probably be able to pick up the flute again. Maybe not as much as before, but more than not at all.

I agree with the above poster - take a little break. Don't give up entirely. I'm an oboeist, so I know a little of what you're talking about. Rest your body. Go to your doctor and see if there are any different medical options that could improve your pain level.

Focus on your health, on trying to improve it. I know it's hard and scary and overwhelming, but you can do it. I'm NOT saying that you can cure yourself, but I am saying that you can probably come up with some coping techniques or treatments that really help you. For me, myofascial release with my physical thereapist coupled with daily medication has improved my condition enough that I can work part-time. Find what works for you so that you can live your life. :)

I agree with the above comments. I'm a pianist and a violist (that never looks right), and I've had to take some time off because I just couldn't play. I found a doctor. One I trust. And we've worked together to get me to a point where I can start playing my piano again. I'm really not sure about the viola. The piano is more important to me. :)

Work with a doctor you trust and find some ways to help feel better and live your life again. Best of luck.

:hugs: don't give up hope! if it's something you love enough, you'll find a way to keep it in your life. it sounds like you are at a point where you are pushing yourself to hard and frustrating yourself when pushing through the pain doesn't work (it never does with fibro btw). take a step back, and see if you can try out some new treatments with either your regular doctor or a natural doctor, and see if you can make some small improvements that will allow you to do what you want to do. try not to get down on yourself and stress out because that's just going to make things worse.

I agree with everybody above. I used to play the flute & I miss it terribly. My x sold it without my knowledge or permission. I've not been able to replace it. Now with the FMS, I couldn't play it to the extent that I used to. It will take time & patience. You won't have to give up your passion. Hopefully, your instructors will be understanding of your medical condition. Best of luck to you.
