The more I see of Fringe, the more I like it. I know it's not exactly everyone's cup of tea, but I look forward to it every week. It's actually kind of nice for once to have a show for which I have no expectations. I can just sit back and enjoy the ride.
I like Walter. He's part brilliant, part psychotic, and almost childlike in his behaviour. It's fun to watch. Another thing I really like is the reversed father-son dynamic between him and Peter. It's Peter who's constantly looking after Walter, instead of the other way around. Their fragile, fledgling relationship is one of the things that brings a human element to the show, and I'm looking forward to watching it develop throughout the series. At first I didn't think I'd like Peter, but Joshua Jackson plays him with just the right balance of charm, snark, and cynical world-weariness. Same goes for Olivia. I was a bit cold on Anna Torv in the beginning, but she's grown on me. And randomly, I really like Charlie, Olivia's friend in the FBI. He calls her Livi. It's sweet.
Turnbull Stakes this weekend, one of the most important races on the spring calendar. I'm planning on getting comfortable on the couch in front of the TV on Saturday afternoon and not budging for the next four hours. Very few race days are broadcast on free-to-air TV, so every year I have to make the most of the few that do get shown.
The Turnbull is likely to be Efficient's last start before the Cup unless Lloyd Williams decides he needs another run, in which case he'll go to the Cox Plate in three weeks time. Given the quality of the field, the weights, and the unsuitable distance, I don't expect my favourite boy to win on Saturday, but I'm hoping at least to see him closing on the leaders within the last few hundred metres of the straight. His last run in the Makybe Diva was promising, and he should finish just as strongly in the Turnbull.
As for the rest of the field, there's a lot of big names looking for their final hit-outs before the big three. Tuesday Joy is headed for the Cox Plate and the Melbourne Cup, Master O'Reilly is bound for the cups double, Maldivian has unfinished business with the Caulfield Cup, and Pompeii Ruler is likely to challenge Weekend Hussler in the Cox Plate. On the strength of Pompeii Ruler's second place three quarters of a length behind Weekend Hussler in the Underwood, I'd rate him a real chance for the Turnbull. The extra 200 metres might be just the advantage he's looking for to close the distance between them. Tuesday Joy, Maldivian, Zarita and Littorio should also be competitive.
Efficient will also meet his half-brother Guillotine, who won the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes at Moonee Valley last up in impressive style. He's underrated, but if he can summon the same performance that saw him beat Maldivian last start, I'll be cheering for him. Anything to watch Weekend Hussler taken down a peg or two. I'm so horrible.
