"You better hurry up, mate, or all the good ones will be taken," George teased his younger brother as they ate breakfast in the Great Hall. The Yule Ball was fast approaching and Harry and Ron had yet to get dates.

"Who're you going with, then?" Ron asked.

"Good point," George said, standing up. "One moment, my dear brother."

Harry, Ron and the other members of Gryffindor house who had been listening to that conversation turned their heads as George pressed his wand against his throat and said: "Sonorus."

"You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off you
You'll feel like heaven to touch
I wanna hold you so much
At long last love has arrived
And I thank Merlin I'm alive
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you..."

George began to weave through the Great Hall slowly, making his way towards the opposite side of the room. Ron was caught somewhere between awe and apprehension. Percy had buried his face in his hands while Dominique was singing along.

"Pardon the way that I stare
There's nothing else to compare
The sight of you leaves me weak
There are no words left to speak--"

At this, George got up on the Hufflepuff table and pointed directly at Alecto Carrow at the Slytherin table.

"But if you feel like I feel
Please let me know that it's real
You're just too good to be true
Can't take my eyes off of you....
I LOVE YOU, LECTO AND IF IT'S QUITE ALL RIGHT,
I NEED YOU, LECTO TO WARM THE LONELY NIGHT;
I LOVE YOU LECTO TRUST IN ME WHEN I SAY:
OH, PRETTY LECTO, DON'T TURN ME I DOWN, I PRAY
OH, PRETTY LECTO, COME TO YULE BALL WITH ME
O COME TO YULE BALL, WITH ME
COME TO YULE BAAALLLL!!"

George managed to perform a rather spectacular swan dive as half a dozen curses went straight at him. Professor McGonagall was upon them like a hawk, scolding them for attacking a young man in love during the season of good cheer. No detentions were given, but points were docked off Slytherin. The Great Hall burst into applause, with the notable exception of the Slytherin table. George lay on his back on the floor and looked up at Angelina. "I hope that impressed you. You and me, Yule Ball?"

"Of course," Angelina smiled at the boy on the floor.

George returned to his seat beside Ron, dusting off his robes. "Got a date."

"Did you have to go through all that?" Ron asked.

"No, it was a detour on the way to asking Angelina," George replied. "How was my performance, Fred? Fred. FRED!"

Fred looked up from the bowl of porridge he had been steadily staring at for the past half hour. "What performance?"

"You mean to say you were here the entire time and you didn't hear a thing?" George poked and prodded his brother. "Get Hermione and Pomfrey. Something's wrong with the boy."

"I'm preoccupied," he said, turning back to his porridge. A book was dropped in front of him. Fred looked up at Albus blankly. Albus shrugged and returned to his table.

In the quiet of his bedroom, Fred turned Albus' book over. It was some odd Muggle text, written in 1800. He read the title again: Pride and Prejudice. Albus had dog-eared a certain page and highlighted text. Fred began to read it: "In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." Fred glared at it for a moment before shutting the book and tossing it into the corner of his trunk. What did Albus know? Nothing. That's right, nothing.

"Fred Weasley, are you trying to drill a hole into the back of my sister's head?" Daphne asked, kicking the boy's foot with her own. Fred looked up at his Potions partner and shrugged. He and George had been separated for not doing the homework and been reassigned. She passed him the bicorn horn for him to grind. Fred complied, grinding the item into a fine powder. "If you ask her, I might be spared the trouble of having to hear her whine about you not asking yet," Daphne said, peering into the cauldron.

"She--what?" Fred looked up from the goat bile he was measuring.

Daphne smacked the top of his head. "Pay attention!" she scolded, taking the measuring cup from him and pouring out the excess. She poured it into their potion. "I'm saving your grade and your messy love life, you could at least try to help me."

"Yes, ma'am," Fred said, slicing the valerian roots with care. "You were saying---?"

Daphne smiled to herself as she stirred their potion. "I was saying...if you just went and asked Astoria already, you would be doing me a great favor as she hasn't shut up about you not asking her since the Yule Ball was announced."

Fred remained quiet for a moment, trying not to grin at what Daphne was saying. Daphne looked at the instructions, which said to let the potion simmer for a little while, so she cast a spell to make the flames go lower before turning to Fred. "You see, Fred, I am a Slytherin. I expect to receive as much as I give. For saving your grade, I expect you to shut my sister up. It isn't really that hard of a deal, now, is it?"

"I did the work, you clean up," Daphne instructed as she quickly turned on her heel and left the dungeons. Fred didn't even have time to assent or dissent. He pointed his wand at the cauldron and levitated it towards the sink, where he could pour what was left of their potion out. The cauldron crashed into someone. Fred quickly banished the cauldron to the sink and rushed to Astoria.

Astoria rubbed the side of her head. "Must you always do that?" she asked, wincing.

Fred touched her head gently and looked to examine where he had struck her. "I'm sorry. Didn't see you."

"You never seem to," she said bitterly. Fred had the unusual feeling it just wasn't about the cauldron anymore.

"Yeah, I'm sorry," he repeated. "Doesn't look like it'll grow a bump. Will you go to the ball with me? You might want to see Madam Pomfrey, though."

"What?" she looked up at him.

"What?"

"Ask properly like a gentleman or I shan't," Astoria wagged her finger.

"Astoria Greengrass, would you do me the pleasure of allowing me to escort you to the Yule Ball?" Fred said.

Astoria giggled. He'd rehearsed! She smiled up at him and nodded. "Yes!" she declared, linking her arms around his neck. He smiled and kissed her.

They jerked apart consciously. "I--" Fred began.

"You--" Astoria stuttered.

"Uhm, well..." Fred looked at her and tried not to blush. "I'll see you, then."

"Uh-huh," she nodded, but her arms were still around his neck. Fred's arms, too, were still around her waist. She giggled nervously.

"Are you all right?"

"Not how I imagined my first kiss would be," she blurted out.

Fred grinned. "And how did you imagine it to be?"

"Oh, I don't know," Astoria said, blushing. "A romantic stroll by the Lake, perhaps?"

Fred gave her a quick kiss, just because he could, before picking her up. "We've still got two hours before curfew!" he declared, laughing. Astoria laughed with him as he ran out of the classroom in the direction of the Lake.

Daphne poked her head back into their Potions classroom. Messy desk. She sighed as she came in and started tidying up their desk. "Psst."

"What is it, Rosier?" she asked, knowing who it was without having to look.

"You, me, ball, Baby?"

"Ask properly or I shan't."

"Daphne, sweetheart, be a dear and come to the Yule Ball with this basket case," Evan said, coming up behind her.

"Yes."
