All Take, No Give

The Sunday before last, our church custodian fell and broke his hip right at the end of the service. At last report, he's going to be immobile for 8 weeks. Our Deacon chairman wrote out all the tasks he performs and all the active Deacons have taken one or more of them. I did the tile entryway mopping the previous Saturday (a > 45 minute job), but today I'm the alternate- ie, I only mop today if the person tasked with the mopping on Thursday or Friday didn't get to it.

On a side note, the mini fridge in our Sunday School classroom may have something wrong with it. For two weeks in a row, orange juice stored in it on one Sunday tastes like a fermented sludge the next Sunday. It's especially weird because the ice compartment stays...icy. I did a really basic exterior check- coils, cord, door seal- and didn't find anything questionable.

Fixing it would be better than buying another one, but perhaps that's where we're going to end up anyway. A couple folks in the class found replacement units that aren't terribly expensive, so if enough of us chip in we may indeed just buy another one and be done with it.

Another thought: we keep cream cheese and creamer in that fridge, but they don't get used every Sunday. Is it possible we just had two crappy orange juice containers in a row? Checking the quality of the other items we've been keeping in there is on my list for tomorrow.

Our yellow squash started wilting and collapsing a few days ago (I started noticing it either Thursday or Wednesday), but everything in the large garden plot is fine. While I was watering yesterday I noticed the cause: squash bugs. I don't think they've been here the whole time, since our yellow squash was big, healthy, and plentiful throughout the summer- but it's odd to see them come sweeping in all of a sudden.

Fortunately, there are several remedies and preventive measures we can use, per this page:

https://www.planetnatural.com/pest-problem-solver/garden-pests/squash-bug-control/

Everything else in our garden plots have not shown any problems- likely because they're not attractive to the bugs. But, there's no reason to let a nasty bug like this remain with impunity. I've started the process for getting rid of them but really the whole family is going to have to get involved if it's going to be effective.

Electrical lab work and material organizing is also going well. It was discovered that there is a TON of Milwaukee brand power tools and other helpful-to-an-electrician goodies that were back on a miscellaneous storage shelf- the guy who's the main point of contact from the school to the Milwaukee tool/demo sales person is going to ask if those were expected to be eventually returned, or if the school can keep them. If we keep them, they may just end up being given as awards to top-performing students...though I wouldn't turn down a few of the items if they were just directly offered to me. =)

Pics of before and after board setups below (bonus Internets points for you if you can spot a cosmetic error!):

Believe it or not, this really does take *hours* to do- and that's if you have all the materials at-hand and ready to go. I also don't have time to test all of these devices so it's anyone's guess if they'll actually function as intended- but if any of them don't work it can be made into a troubleshooting lesson by the teacher. =P

The USAA insurance check still hasn't been provided this week, so angry phone calls were made...which turned into mildly-polite voice mails. We need that money so we can pay off our credit card balance by the 28th- so there's still time, but not for more fooling around. Being able to sit back and look at all the completed work is nice, but the stress over whether or not our *rightfully appointed compensation as-of-at-least-two-weeks-ago* is going to arrive in a timely manner is kinda cancelling out some of that.

Tomorrow I have been unexpectedly asked to lead Bible study in class for the third Sunday in a row. It's not a problem, really- but it's weird to have to do that without knowing the actual reason and with relatively short notice (but I do my prep for class Saturday night ANYWAY).

Trivial note: we gave up on Pizza Hut a while back when they promoted trans-agenda garbage for their Bookit program, and have stuck to frozen pizzas, Eagle One, or the occasional Cici's visit for the family pizza fix. However, thanks to some timely 40-50% coupon offers from Domino's we have become quite fond of the brand- even Amy, who was aggressively not-a-fan for quite some time. I think the best thing about their pizza is that they taste fantastic as (toaster oven) reheats. As long as the high-percent coupons keep flowing, we'll keep being happy buyers.

And on that note, I think that's a wrap- I still have a lot to do around here (and the lab) today.

God is good. That is all.
