As per
this news post: you can now repost any of your journal entries or comments immediately to Facebook or Twitter. Isn't that lovely?
... Well, no, not really. It is, at absolute best, extremely annoying.
Worse, even if you disable these features for yourself, there is no way to stop your friends from implementing them. So any comments they make on your LJ can be reposted, with a link back to the post. Friends-lock will still hold, but honestly? That won't make a difference if you quote any part of the post back, a common practice in LJ comments, or if it's in any way obvious what the comment is about.
For the record? If you plan on doing this, please let me know so I can lock you out of any of my posts containing sensitive information. You don't get to share LJ entries on my behalf. Sorry if that sounds harsh, but I like that my real life and LJ life are mostly separate, and I'm lucky, in that I don't have a stalker, and my family are understanding about my fandom participation, and my workplace isn't likely to fire me for it, and I don't tend to blog about anything particularly out-there anyway. But lots of people use LJ to post things that they really, really can't talk about elsewhere - which could be anything from the life they're building away from an abusive ex to their intense desire to be dominated by Lady Gaga. The point is they've chosen to make those things private and, LJ, it is not for you to decide they can be shared by anyone who happens to comment on them.
(ETA: I'm guessing most people won't be using this, so I'm sorry if this comes across like I'm having a go at any of you! I'm not, ILU all.)
To me, this whole thing smacks of someone in the higher-ups at LJ saying, We have to get ourselves onto that whole "social networking platform" bandwagon - only they quite clearly haven't given any thought whatsoever to how most LJ users actually use the service. I mean, I have 51 mutual friends and not a single one uses their (full) real name as their screenname.
I'll be doing some admin on my tags etc and then from now on I'll be cross-posting to Dreamwidth (
fera_festiva). I'll still be here primarily, but I want to be ready to jump ship if need be.
