CHICAGO -- A federal judge Friday sentenced Edward Mathieu, the South Elgin man convicted of possessing and distributing child pornography, to 30 years in prison.
Mathieu, who pleaded guilty in August to nine counts, received the maximum sentence for federal charges of coercing a minor to engage in sexual conduct for photographic purposes with the intent to distribute the photos on the Internet.
Some of the photos, taken in late 2004 and earlier this year, depict Mathieu engaged in sex acts with a 5-year-old Kane County girl.
There is no parole in the federal system, but Mathieu can receive good-time credit, which cannot be more than 15 percent of his sentence, federal prosecutor Mark Schneider said.
Mathieu, 45, is charged locally with three counts of predatory criminal sexual assault for engaging in sex acts with a girl under age 10 between January and February, Assistant State's Attorney Justin Fitzsimmons said.
Prosecutors have made a plea offer to Mathieu. He returns to court Nov. 18.
Police began investigating Mathieu in February after a Cook County investigator working as an undercover postal inspector found a video depicting images of child pornography, court records state.
The video was traced back to Elgiloy Specialty Metals in Elgin, and a computer used by Mathieu, who was a manager at the company, according to court documents.
Mathieu admitted to mailing the child pornography video to investigators and to using his work computer to collect, trade and distribute child pornography, according to court records.
