Fannish Entry...part two...

Oct 11, 2005 04:04

The Lash episode of Sentinel was very happying of course. There was sexonacouch!Blair and bondage!Blair, and yay Jim having to rescue him.

Jason Carter was also very cute on Sentinel, but it led to thoughts that omg DUG started here! And that made me giggle whenever he was onscreen.

Odyssey 5 is good, just like I thought it would be. And Longinus is very good in it yay just like he always is. ::hearts Longinus liek whoa...but not enough to remember his actorish name right now::

Random Jump Street Thoughts

Doug walks with his arm firmly around Tommy. Doug manhandles Tommy all the time. Doug and Tommy stand so close together that it looks like they're one person with two heads.

Tommy in the make-up from being in drag (still in the dress thanks) was very pretty. And Tommy and the Captain's massive eyefucking session while Tommy was in makeup was kind of shocking in its blatantness.

In the "Hey let's be actors!" episode, when Doug goes after that woman, the close-up on Tommy's face is SO SAD AND BEREFT. And omg how jealous is Doug about Tommy's new gf! He goes so far as to sabotage Tommy's big brother application because of her and is just so--bitchy. Tommy wants to bring his gf to meet his mom instead of going on a cruise with Doug at Christmas, so then Doug tags along with Tom and his gf, and Doug and the gf talk about how cute Tom is when he's embarrassed and OMG IT IS SO CUTE. They bond over Tom's cuteness and forget to hate each other.

Tommy is kidnapped and Doug is all--if you hurt my partner I will kill you. Yay.

Judy kisses all the boys goodbye at Christmas--just so cute! I love how close they all are. Then Judy confirms her harem when on Valentine's Day she is the date for all the males of the station.

Ioki's Vietnamese!angst was yummy, and chibi Ioki was cuuuute!

I love the McQuade brothers more every time I see them! The ripped clothes, the outrageous behavior, Tom and Doug in constant physical contact!

The Death of Cathy

Well, I finally got to see Cathy's death. Now I know what Henry Jenkins was talking about in Textual Poachers. It was very well executed, if a little rushed. (Those months of pregnancy--I guess time flies when you're abducted and imprisoned...) However, I disagree with many of the choices the writers made (and then executed pretty well):

-The nature montage in place of sex. It was ridiculous. I don't understand. We've waited *years* for Vincent and Cathy to consummate their relationship, and we don't even get to really see them kiss.

-The choice to have Vincent lose his psychic connection with Cathy as a result of his pon farr insanity last season (which was dead sexy. I love savagelyangsty!Vincent.) This was obviously a plot device to keep Vincent from finding her long enough for Cathy to have a baby and for her to be killed. But it goes against everything we've ever known about Vincent and Cathy. It's not that without the bond, they're not in love. But without the bond, they don't have that *special* love, the *sacred* love that makes their love story worth watching. If we don't get to have crazy bestial sex like in Inuyasha fanfiction, then we should at least preserve the courtly ideal, Lancelot-type love by maintaining the bond. With Lancelot and the Queen (the epitome of courtly love stories), their love is frequently presented as sacred, even more sacred than God (and the Queen's holy wedding vows). But it is sacred because it is pure of the stain of carnal knowledge. This is the paradigm Beauty and the Beast seems to be following. But then they mess it up. It *seems* even as if the sacred bond could have been lost as a direct result of the sex. But they don't even really commit to the sex. If they're going to make Cathy and Vincent a "normal" couple, then they should let them show physical affection onscreen like a "normal" couple. The case that the writers seem to be making is that since Vincent was crazy and Cathy had to resort to sexual healing, this destroyed their love. It is a tragedy, and the fatal mistake is the sex. The sex leads to Vincent losing his memories of Cathy and his bond with Cathy. His inability to sense her through the bond combined with her being pregnant with a "special baby" leads to her prolonged imprisonment and murder. I do not agree with this old-fashioned view of sex as impure and tragic. It pisses me off. Why can't poor Vincent be happy for once?

-Vincent's amnesia was also annoying, but convenient for Cathy to refrain from telling him about the pregnancy. I did feel sorry for her.

-Vincent's sudden psychic bond with his child but continued lack of bond with Cathy also pissed me off. If he's well enough to have psychic bonds, then he should regain his bond with Cathy. Oh I forgot, she's a fallen woman now. Jesus.

-Her death scene was quite touching, but it should never have happened while there were still that many episodes left. I remember being dead bored with the red-headed chick when I saw those subsequent episodes. I mean, how can you have a series about two lovers when one of them is dead? That's just stupid. If Linda Hamilton didn't want to be on the show anymore, then the show should be about actually seeing those months when Cathy is pregnant and imprisoned (and therefore offscreen), and seeing Vincent's increasingly desperate search for her (and a revelation that she is pregnant). His quest to be reunited with his love would make a much more compelling story than his quest to kind-of-catch-her-killer-and-be-a-single-dad did. (I should really rewatch the later episodes before judging them though.) And then Cathy could guest star for the finale and either die or be rescued. Bah.

I really empathize with the fans of Beauty and the Beast and their story as described in Textual Poachers. I empathize because I so would have been one of them. They execute this massive save the show campaign after that killer pon farr cliffhanger of a series finale. (I also had to wait a month or so after the cliffhanger while the next episode downloaded, and it was *hard*.) Then they win like the first fan campaign that ever got a show back on the air. Go them! They're happy, they sit down in front of the TV to watch their hard-won new season of Vincent/Cathy, and what do they see? Cathy dies in the second episode. Um. Sorry?

CATHY: Yeah, I'm doing another Terminator movie. I don't have time for this.

I mean, God! How devastating for those fans.

PETER DELUISE OMG
I totally didn't make the connection before, but Peter Deluise is Dagwood! That kind of...freaks me out, honestly. I mean, nothing against Dagwood, but he's not the kind of character I want to see in a sexual light, and Doug I guess...is.

Jump Street Creator dude did say that Peter was the most talented in Jump Street, more talented than Johnny Depp. Looking at Johnny's early overacting, I'd be inclined to agree. And looking at Peter's IMDB profile, it looks like he's written and directed EVERY EPISODE OF SG1 EVER.

I've been slowly warming to SG1 over my years in fandom. I loved the movie, but the one episode I caught on Showtime did nothing for me. I do love the Farscape-esque "Never getting to go home, always chosen to save the universe" situation, and the Jack/Daniel is of course the main draw. Or make that just the Daniel, with a side of /Jack. But the military culture is distasteful to me. There was a vid I saw recently, which had a dirtyhalf-naked!Jack with his hands tied behind his back kneeling before a prettifiedfancydressed!Daniel on a throne. THIS NEEDS TO HAPPEN MORE OFTEN. So now I want to see that. Yay for built-in AUs. But speaking of Farscape, now I feel disloyal for wanting to watch SG1, as if I had to choose! I am still bitter about the cancellation, just like TV Guide. And the sheer scope of SG1 is daunting. What are we on, season 10 now? I hear it's pretty uneven too.

Another series I've been yearning for is TOS. I was just looking at some screencaps of the series, with much imprisonment and torture and whipping and lack of personal space. Yes. I <3 Spock so much! But this is silly, because there are 5 series of which I have a significant number of episodes downloaded but unwatched. And that's just the English-language series. I should finish those first. Really!

Guest-star Crossover Corner!

The CSM from the X-Files and Dex from Aspen Extreme were in the same episode of Jump St.

John Crichton's Dad from Farscape is Tommy's dead police dad in Jump Street. I guess he gives good Father-of-Hero.

Mouse from Beauty and the Beast is the religious back-from-the-dead teen in the evolution episode of Jump Street (and also apparently the English voice of the fannonically evil, Yama-abusing Mr. Ishida in Digimon, which is kind of hard to reconcile with sweet little Mouse.)

The evil skateboarding changing-clothes-in-elevator criminal immie in Highlander (okay, it's been awhile since I saw that episode) is an assistant sting police guy in Jump St who gets gunned down by crooks in police uniforms.

Huey from Due South and Charlie from Highlander are both in the same episode of Odyssey 5. Huey is even a cop.

omgwtf Simon from the Sentinel is on 21 Jump St as a corrupt cop. O.O

The Due South faith healer chick is a druggie on the Sentinel.

Recurring guest stars! The black captain from Forever Knight and Jason Priestly are both on Jump St *again*, only as different characters, shhh.

I HEARD THERE WILL BE A NEW SHARPE MOVIE! YAY! Like a real movie, maybe, not like a TV-movie miniseries thing. Now I just have to...watch all the other Sharpe movies ever. There are about 16 I think...

Where are the new "Boondock Saints" and "Last Unicorn" movies? They've been "in production" for like two years! Come on already!

I'm excited about the new Narnia movies, of course, even if I feel like I can't look at Susan without crying because Oh Susan, stockings and boys are *not* as important as Aslan! You used to be so- so wonderful! And now you never get to go back to Narnia Heaven. ::sniff:: But I *am* annoyed at all the "For years the creatures of the Chronicles of Narnia have existed only in the imaginations of its readers." Um, and in the eyes of the millions of people who saw the BBC Narnia movies. I have all those movies, and I really love them. Caspian is hot, yo. I'm irked that no one seems to remember them now.

I saw Serenity yay! But it was on the WORST CAM EVER BUU. The "giant head cam," as it will forever live in infamy, is the only copy of Serenity out there as of yet, but that needs to be remedied now. ::stern look at people in the West with videocameras and common sense::

Oh, and WASH LIIIIIIIIVES!

RL-ish entry and Persuaders!entry still...to come. ::runs away::
